Is keyboard magazine insane? You need too bleep out the s-word? The Joey D. article bleeped out the s-word. Now i have seen everything. Then forget about Tori Amos. Almost every word she said was bleeped out. I want to read the text the same as the interview was given. Who exactly are you trying to protect anyway? Yes there will be the one or two people that just can't handle it and i say let um go. I have subscribed to Keyboard for ove 15 years. I just can't stand it anymore! I think 99.99% of us can deal with the colorful language that musicians use. Please let the 0.01 percent that can't go!

On the live blog site we did for the NAMM show (livefrom.musicplayer.com), the censoring algorithm built into the site was so overzealous that it actually displayed "***ie Han***" for Herbie Hancock. No sh-, um, no joke.

To seriously address Joe's complaint, the "0.01% that can't handle it" also happen to be the most vocal, the most likely to try to get stuff pulled from a school library and make other kinds of noise, etc.

I don't like it either, but the fact remains that we don't want anyone - not a single reader - to be deprived of all the legitimate musical and technical know-how in the mag because either they or someone who controls what they access gets offended by a cuss word.

I have no problem with the bleeping bleeps. ;\)

Seriously, the way Keyboard is doing it is fine with me, because I can still tell what the word is.

joebrah,

It amazes me that you are so opposed to the removal of profanity from the magazine. In my opinion, there's no place for swears and vulgarity in a pro publication like Keyboard, and calling it "colorful" language is a weak attempt to justify why it should be included.

When I look at magazines for Architects, Doctors, Photographers, Dancers, and other pros, I rarely if ever see vulgarity...it's just not professional. Why should Keyboard lower its standards?

So Keyboard Mag: Keep it clean! And if there are a few readers who just can't stand NOT seeing vulgarity, let THEM go.
