I don't know how many of you have checked this out (Pandora.com) or the Musical Genome Project, but I tooled with it a bit here recently, and I'm here to say, they've gotten a LOT smarter.

Site prompted me for a band name. I responded "Dream Theater" - site responded "Now we'll play a song by Dream Theater that exemplifies its essence: hard rock roots, with changing moods and time signatures - and proceeded to play a great anthem from Train of Thought - "This Dying Soul"

So I listen on...

They proceed to "This Pain" by Kamelot which, as the site stated, "has similar hard rock roots, demanding instrumental passages..." (I didn't catch the rest)...

Honestly, I'd never listened to Kamelot, but, hey, not bad at all!

Moving on, I was presented with "Engraved Within" by Serenity - another band I'd never heard of - and, while it's not Dream Theater, it's not bad - a little formulaic as prog rock goes, though.

I wander through their catalog a good ways. Symphony X, Yngwie (I promptly nixed that one), more Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, more Symphony X, IQ (another new one to me!), Iron Maiden, more Dream Theater...

Here I hit a couple of downsides...

1) They only let you skip a couple of songs per hour - you HAVE to listen to what they feed you after a certain point. Bad if it's prog metal or prog rock - lots of LONG songs! \:D

2) There's no middle ground when you "vote" on a given piece - it's either I like, I don't like, or I'm sick of it don't play it again for a month. I'd prefer to have the option of "well, it's ok, but I'd rather hear something else.

All in all, for a free service, it's pretty good - but they do make you register after 40 minutes of listening, and it's not available outside the US.

I've exchanged a few emails with Tim Westergen, it's a great project.
I'm going to try to carry on accessing it by proxy.

Yeah, right now I can't access anything streaming from work, but once they reassign me to remote (Work from Home! WOOHOO!) I'll have my radio station kickin' in the background!

I used Gentle Giant as a starting point and got a lot of good stuff.

Best,

I have been frequently using it. It does a better job of determining what I like than launch but anti-skip feature is bugging me.

\:\(

I was going to recommend some stations from my profile but since I can't log in from the UK it seems they have deleted my profile.

Even if I use a proxy to log in I will have to build a whole new profile.

Sad.

As far as not being able to skip a song without saying you don't like it, set up another station and if you want to skip the current song, just switch to the other station.
