I am only just starting in this home acoustic subject and would appreciate some orientation. I play keyboards, guitar and sing, and never had a space at home where I could exercise my poor chops without bothering family&neighbors.

I intend to seize the opportunity of moving into a new house (probably a town home here in Ottawa) to build a modest music space in the basement. My main concern is sound isolation. I already know that there's no such thing as 100% acoustic isolation, but intend to do everything reasonable to achieve the highest possible degree of isolation.

I do realize that the bulk of the articles address the acoustic qualities of the room itself, not its acoustic isolation. I am reading the FAQ to try and optimize this aspect as well, but good internal acoustics would be useless in my case if the room does not keep the sound from leaking to the rest of my house and to the neighbors...

Could you point out books, articles or other specific sources of info that could help my planning? For the record, I am a Civil Engineer and intend to build the basement studio myself. I will be limited by the house's blueprints, but assume I can get at least a 10'x12' space. I have no intention of recording at all, only playing, sometimes with a drums/bass pre-recorded template for support. I have no idea of how much isolation I can expect to get at all, but would like to be able to play and sing at home at the same level I’m used to onstage (nothing brutal, typically 50 to 100 people rooms, classic rock material such as Queen, whitesnake, etc.).

Any input will be appreciated .

Thanks Ethan. I already ordered the book and it should aid in educating myself. Once I have it read I'll come back with objective questions.
