I just recently purchased an edirol fa 66 and a project stuio b1 mic and I am using adobe audition to record the vocals. When i use to record just into my audio input of my computer i could adjust the recording volume inside the system setup of my computer now that i am using the edirol i dont see these settings.

The reason I ask is when im recording i am having to turn the mic sensor knob on the edirol just about to max and still the recording volume isnt that loud around -15 - 1-10 db. I have not been able to find any settings in adobe auditon either to get the recording at a higher level. I know i can boost them after the fact but im curious should the sensor knob on the edirol be turned up so high?

Phantom switch on? That'd be the only guess I could offer.

yes the phantom switch is turned on. if she does hit the high notes then the recording does go up to zero. I just am conserned that im having to turn the sensory knob up so high on the front and was wondering is that normal. I have it literally 90 - 95% turned its almost turned copletely.

OK, I seem to have misunderstood your earlier question. If you're peaking at 0dbfs, you've got it turned up too high. I thought you were saying you couldn't get a peak any higher than -15dB, which is still plenty hot, but if there's noise issues I suppose you might want to get it up to -10 at the peaks.

If you're trying to get her nominal vocal level at 0dB, you're asking for clipping problems, and you're asking for trouble on mixdown later.

What makes you believe you need to have the vocal tracking in at 0dB?

0dbfs is way too hot.

-18 to -20 coresponds to what was 0 in the analog days.

If you record everything as hot as possible, you are just going to have to turn each track down when you start to mix things together.... you only have so much room... it is kind of like filling a glass full of water. Once the glass is full, the rest spills out onto the floor and is wasted.

The idea of recording each track with average levels hitting around analog 0 is that this is a good compromise between the primary signal, and the npise created by the electronics. If the signal is too soft, the noise of the electronics is audible in the quieter parts. Conversely, if you push the signal too hot and are maxing out the preamps, again you are likely to have noise problems intruding into the primary signal. Most electronic stuff does not perform within published specs when pushed to the max. (I take that back... high dollar stuff usually does perform well when pushed, but budget gear usually has construction limitations which affect performance when pushed hard.)

Anyway, if you like what you hear when the controls are maxed out, no harm done. But you may have an easier time mixing if you use a lighter hand on the controls. You may find that when you start to mix together a number of tracks, you might like the overall sound better if you have to make fewer adjustments to volume or tone.

I apreciate you guys responding! The sound is fine to me I just was making sure nothing was either wrong with the mic or aduio interface. so having to turn the sensor/gain knob up that high isnt out the ordinary?

It's out of the ordinary because you're turning it up too loud. There's no reason for you to try and capture vocals that hot!
