If I'm runnig audio spdif into the delta 1010 then no a/d conversion is actually taking place...
So if I track audio spdif like this is the delta adding any of its color to the audio?
If not then what are the actual benefits of a better dsp soundcard? I know there are some but what are they since the conversion is happening before hand?

"color"
Very, very subjective term.
The Delta 1010 doesn't actually have a "color" of its own, it's designed to be quiet and neutral.
DSP cards: Digital Signal Processing - has absolutely nothing to do with A/D conversion, it's all about extra processing power for plugin FX once the sound is in the box.
so the the converters can send digital in via spdif lightpipe or whatever with it paticular sonic quality......... and the benefit of a better dsp card is more processing power... got it.
Lastly....So in a standalone Ad/Da conveter does it come with software to control it or is it just plug and play with the software interface belonging to the dsp card?
So would converters on a workstation i.e. motif or fantom be superior runing spdif to the delta as opposed to running said workstation analogue to a standalone a/d converter i.e. apoggee then from said converter digitally to soundcard?
