i'm building a bunch of low bass traps following the plans found here: ethans bass traps plans

since i have lots of 9mm thick OBS (or OSB) left over from building the studio i was wondering if i could use that one for the low bass trap.
the weight of it is 5.85 kg/m2.
i'm building 4 of them 70" by 24"

in case it's not ok to use i'll get plywood ;\)

thx

Cez

Yes, OSB (oriented strand board) should be okay.

thx ethan,
that's great cause i got plenty of osb to make lots of traps \:D
i'll post comparative results as soon as i have them ;\)

ok, i've built and installed 4 6x2 feet low bass traps but i see little to no improvement in the response of the room \:\(
I figured that although i'm not done i'd see some improvement...
I've done some tests and found that they're resonating at 58Hz.
Shall i run te test with louder volumes?
Any thoughts an any of this?
Thx as usual

The low-bass trap in my plans article has a center frequency around 100 Hz, and the high-bass type is around 180 Hz. You need both types to treat a room. A tuning of 58 Hz is not so useful because the worst bass problems in most small rooms are between 80 Hz and 200 to 300 Hz.

where did you place them in the room? corners? on mode points? these are pressure traps so they need to be in the right spot to be effective... also sealed very well and the panel has to be free to vibrate but you need internal insulation so the cavity resonance is dampened.

Ethan:
I think that the OSB it too dense so i'm gonna try tomorrow to get some plywood and use that to raise the frequency of resonance.

Gullfo:
i think i placed them in mode points... my room has a big null @ 57Hz.
I went around the room with a test mic and found the places where i had the most volume at 57Hz and placed the panels there. Hope that's the right way of finding the spot \:P
For the construction instead u said that the panel has to be free to move but sealed. I did put silicone around the entire perimeter of the board and i'm pretty sure that is sealed. I also put screws all around tho to keep it tight. How would you suggest to leave more freedom to the panel? Maybe after the silicon is dry I could remove the screws?

Thx a lot u guys, i really appreciate the help. I'm determined to make the room response the flattest possible if it is the last thing i do \:D

Yes, that sounds correct, as long as you had the microphone right at the walls.

Thx Ethan,
i'm having a doubt tho, i'm using high density fiberglass with a density of 105 Kg per cubic meter, so a similar density to the 705, although it's only 4 cm thick (about 1&3/4").
do u think is suitable for the panel bass traps?

An other question, since i'm covering up quite a lot of surface with the panels the high end is deteriorating, so i was thinking to make an additional wooden frame coming off the sides of the bass panels an put of it some piramidal acoustic foam on it so that they're kind of on top of each other without touching.
I figured that the bass freq will travel trough the foam and go to the bass panel wile the high freq will be treated by it.
What do u think of that?

Thx u guys \:\)

ok guys,
this is where i'm at:

This is the response with the helzmot panel only:

this is the response with 1 helzmot panel, 3 low low bass traps (around 60Hz) and 3 low bass traps (around 110Hz).
Each of them are 6 by 2 feet.

Any thoughts? what do u guys think i should do next? u think it's improving as it should?

Thx a lot

Yeah, that looks a little better. But you still need bass trapping at the higher bass frequences.

I dunno, I guess more bass traps will help that further.

Hi guys,
just an update.
I've run out of space where to put bass traps \:D
i've put up a bunch of wide range bass traps (with no wooden panel)and they have totally helped with the 100~200Hz range. Still i have a big deep @ 56 \:\(
Also the broad band traps have done some damage to the 500~4000Hz area but i'm gonna put some tin foil in front of them b4 covering them with fabric to see if that helps.
One thing i could use id an example of a decent room responce graph to see what a possible target curve could be.
Thx a usual
Cez

PS:

here are the results:

the black line is the freq response of the room (with added aluminum foil on some of the broadband traps) and the green is the reponse with an eq inserted before the speackers for additional correction.
