Most of my questions arise from not having the gear physically in front of me to look at and understand...so pardon me for trying to conceptually get ahold of these things...anyway.....
with reagrds on how to actually connect converters in my setup....
1.say for instance I had an rosetta 800...would it make sense to run that into the pc via a lynx card like the AES16 or is that redundant?
2.If you are supposed to run it in through a card as such...what type of connection and cable would it be? (maybe the 25pin-Xlrout to Xlrin-25pin?)
3.If you have a rosetta and AES16 do both have software that controls them on the pc or would it just be the AES16?
Also would i have to run my two keyboards and one mic through a mixer and then into the apogee (being that neither keyboard has xlrs) or do you can you connect your keys straight into the converter (and what type of connection?).
Just trying to learn

Thanks.
I think I am starting to realize the difference between cards converters etc.
Iy can be confusing at first esp if you start out with something like the delta where the card and converters are in thew form of one piece.

Essentially, with the firewire card upgrade, the Rosetta functions as an external soundcard. Otherwise, you need a soundcard with an ADAT or dual SMUT optical interface to transmit the digital data from the Rosetta.
Obviously, the more elegant solution is to add on the FW card to the Rosetta itself.
As to the front end, a mixer really doesn't solve your problem - the Rosetta's breakout cable is all XLR, and not many standard mixers have XLR insert points or 1-out-per-channel.
Something like This Focusrite 8-channel pre would be right up your alley, as it has both XLR and 1/4" instrument inputs per channel, and a 25-pin D-Sub analog out to connect to the Rosetta seamlessly with a single cable.

I'm not familiar with the Rosetta, but why not? Isn't it just a matter of getting a hot leg to the right pin? Seems to work with a ton of other gear.

Because the Rosetta has no gain control on the inputs, would be the primary reason.

If you have only two keyboards and one mic, why would you buy either of these products? My answer would be some 8 channel or less setup. If you are unfamiliar with the process of recording, you might look into one of the inexpensive (less than $200) firewire or USB bundles available from most manufacturers, such as the Tascam US 122. This will get your feet wet for a reasonable fee, allowing you to get familiar with the process and make better decisions.

Agreed, get yourself something like a Presonus Firebox, which has 4 analog inputs (2 wiht pres, 2 line level only) and 6 analog outs (plus 2 i/o spdif and midi) and be done with it. It's $300 new, about $150 used off e-bay or Craigslist, and has a volume control for the monitor outs, and is a very nice unit, with excellent converters. If either of your keys has spdif outs, you can plug one into the spdif i/o, the other into the line inputs, and have 2 mic/line inputs open for vocals. If no spdif, then use the 4 inputs at line level for keys and repatch a mic for vocals.
IMHO a Rosetta and peripherals would be a huge waste of money for you at this juncture. Spend the savings on good monitors, acoustic room tuning or better mics.

thanks for all the responses. I ask alot of questions to try and understand concepts.
I'm not going out today and buying an Apogee converters but I often try to visualize these things without being able to see them first hand since I have no actual studio to visit for reference purposes.
When those of us with less experience ask "beginner" questions about high end gear or otherwise. Its not that we are trying to walk before we crawl...it is often the normal tendency to be inqusitive about things as they are presented to you.
Sometimes we need someone to explain simplethings about connections etc. to gear we are a distance a way from adopting...For those with limited access to pro facilities or equipment..these forums can be one of the primary sources of info (other than books and owner's manuals)
Thanks again
