My audio room is 11'x15'x9' with room treatments including bass traps, side, ceiling and corner traps. I have thought about opening the ceiling on the short wall (behind the speakers)
with a 8'x 2'vent. The area above the ceiling approximately 2' tall and quite open (between the 1st and 2nd floor). Any idea as to if this would increase the room size from an acoustic perspective? Would this change room modes/nodes?
Thanks!

I don't know that raising the ceiling in the front will be worth the effort. Yes, it will help a little, but the preferred direction for angled ceilings is to rise in the rear. If you can reverse your setup then it might be useful. But I don't expect a huge improvement, just a small one.

Ethan,
To clarify, I would not be raising the ceiling but providing a 2' x 8' opening into the crawl space (probably another 1000sqft of area) above the audio room. The assumption is this would provide a vent for the pressure from the low frequency sound waves. Or am I constrainded by the physical dimensions of the room regardless of venting the pressure wave(s). I have french doors leading into the room and the bass is much cleaner when the doors are open, hence my thoughts on the ceiling vent.
Thanks for responding and for your input. Your web site has been very helpful in developing my room acoustics.

you could open the gap and put in a 4" 3pcf layer of rigid insulation into the opening and see what happens. it might be more effective to open a 2'x3' on each corner w/ insulation. if its possible to get into the space,or maybe you can just poke your head up into the open and hang some insulation a couple of feet all around the opening to create a "second layer" to the layer you put into opening. you'd also want to ensure the joists have R19 insulation between them to dampen the ceiling...

of course you're aware that cutting 24ft2 of holes into your ceiling is going to reduce your isolation :-)

Glen,
Thanks for the diagram and insight. Fortunately this is my dedicated audio room so I have quite a bit of liberty in "adjustments". \:\) The area between floors does have R19 between the joist but I like the idea of the second layer as the master bedroom is directly above the audio room. Unfortunately I have spot lights around the perimeter of the room so corner openings would not be possible at this time, thus the reason for the single large opening. In addition to the speakers seeing a larger room I’m hoping this will shift the null points in the room which would provide for additional flexibility in listening position options. With the room only 15’ deep and the speakers at 42” from the front wall and 6’8” apart and the listening position at 7’ from the speakers the seating is approximately 18” from the rear wall, exactly in the middle of a bass node. I'm in the mist of shooting the room from various positions in a effort to map the modes and nulls. Once I complete we may start cutting holes. after all it's only drywall. Will post with my findings...
