The 38% rule, and attempting to keep them 1.5' off the rear wall, places my Tannoy Ellipse 8s at 2'8" from the listening position. The manual however states a "typical listening distance" of 4'-7'.

What am I sacrificing by sitting so close? I would expect the direct sound:ambient sound ratio would be higher than normal, but is there any other reason why they choose the number they do in the manual?

What's theoretically more important: maintaining the 38% rule, keeping the monitors off of boundaries, or adhering to the recommended listening distance?

Thanks,

Dave

38% is a starting point. generally, start w/ 70% of the room width for spacing the monitors and create a 60° equilateral triangle with the listening position @ 38% from the front wall and the monitors approx up to the front wall. shrink or expand to fit based on monitor size and actual positioning available.

larger monitors typically need to be further away than small ones. you want the right balance so the monitors don't sound "too close" or "too far". if you're monitoring at 77dB-85dB this will approximate the "right" level for most situations.

monitor height about 38-42% of room height or balanced to listener height.

Thanks for the response.

Using your method however places the front face of my monitors at 2" off the back wall (physically impossible). So I have to move them up and in until they are 1' or more off the wall. But then I'm too close to the monitors.

Room is 9'5" x 14'2"

Thanks,

Dave

70% of 9'5" is 6'7"

With a 6'7" spacing, my listening position would need to be 7'8" back from the front wall to form an equilateral triangle and have the monitors 1' off the back wall. 7'8" is pretty much smack dab in the middle of the room which, to my understanding, is the worst place for room nodes caused by the length dimension. Geometrically speaking it seems impossible for me to have ideal monitor placement, so my question is: what is the best sacrifice to make.

Thanks,

Dave
