Hi, this is my first post and I've had Acoustic OD in the last week. I've read a lost of Ethans essays, esp. on setting up the room but I can't find a lot on what to do with a room with a Bay window. I'm setting up a room in my house mainly for mixing, but also for recording vocals (building a booth for this), and bass guitar.

My problem at the moment is where to place the monitors (Tannoy System 800s)

http://www.tannoy-speakers.com/s.php?product=160&title=System+800&s=40.

Considering the bay window, does anyone have any thoughts about this???
the room has a wooden floor and an 8ft ceiling:
Scale drawing can be seen here:

Sorry to be a pest, but I could really do with some help on this as I am hoping to start sorting the room out tonight. Just can't understand where to place the monitors and mixing position. As mixing will be the main premise of the room I want to start with monitor position and build around that. I understand the concept of being 38% from the wall (longest side) but my room seems almost square, abeit the bay window, which is throwing me for a loop. Any advice you could offer would be greatly recieved as I am completely baffled by this.

Thanks for your time,

Steve

Hi.

It is probably best to set up the monitoring configuration with you facing the window, equidistantly between the side walls and as far away from the back wall as possible.
After that, put as much treatment as possible in corners, walls and ceiling. That will be necessary in order to turn this room into a better acoustic environment.

Thanks so much for the reply. Would placing the monitors IN the bay, in a nearfield configuration, cause any problems??

I agree with ydope about facing the window. As for IN the bay, the only way to know what happens is to measure as you experiment with different placements. My gut feeling is your biggest problem is the square room shape.

Yeah I figured the square is a problem. Any ideas how I could combat this??? I do have an upright piano to in there as well, on the wall opposite the door, (if that would make any difference to room shape).

Well I figured that would be a good start. I've bought 4" thick 705 for the corners of the room and 4" 703 for the wall opposite the Bay window. I've pretty much covered that whole wall, abeit there is a 1.25m radiator on it in the middle. Theres a large rug covering 70% of the floor too. Does this seem like a decent start to proceedings?

One other thing I was wondering was whether to cover the bay window. Ideally I'd like to cover it as much as possible to minimise sound leakage going outside but I'm worried this might be a problem as most studios I see are left quite reflective behind the monitors. Any thoughts on this would be great.
Thanks again

Steve

Start? Sure. But my crystal ball shows more bass traps in your future.

I'm not concerned about reflections since your speakers point away from the window. But sound isolation is a whole 'nother ballgame.

sounds ominous. I presume you mean a lot more? btw: I've just been using 2" 705 panels sandwiched together and covered in muslin (no plywood). Is this ok?

If by "sandwiched" you mean four inches thick, Yes that's fine.
