Hi there, I am requesting you run a cover issue on Mark Farner and give the man some recognition that he deserves as one of the most influential American guitar players of our time. Not to mention his voice!

Grand Funk Railroad was truly an American band....they rocked Led Zep off the stage, set a sell out record at Shea Stadium that exists to this day, bigger sales there than the Beatles.....Mark should get a cover. Go download the red Grand Funk album from Itunes if you need a little reminding...LOL....and turn it UP!!!

"Inside Looking Out".....slam it!!

Thanks. Fumbly.

He certainly is worthy of a cover story. I don't recall reading much too much about Mark in GP over the years. I do believe
the man was more influential than he's probably given credit for.

An emphasis on Grand Funk and what Mark's been up to the last few years.

How about an accompanying article on some of the important Grand Funk riffs and/or solos?

Yeah, how many records did they sell? 25 million or thereabouts?

Now that's an important, influential band. I'd definitely like to see an article on GFR too.

How good were they, though?

I thought they were mediocre back in the day, but it'd be interesting to give a fresh listen today... maybe I was wrong! (I was only a kid in his teens at the time!)

But I'd have to listen and be impressed first to decide that Mark Farner deserves a cover more so than the excellent players active TODAY....

Compared to what's out there today in the guise of a band, it's like comparing a pound of gold to a pound of sawdust. Compared to other bands of that period, it's an individual judgement call by those of us that were aware at the time.. very subjective thing.

If you want to leave them happy, fired up and shouting at the end of the night, make "American Band" your band's closing number. Guaranteed!

Best, Paul

As a teenage fan of GFR, I look back on them fondly sometimes but as I've not heard them in quite a while, I wonder about their "rill skill" level though rumours were rife that Zappa offered drummer Don Brewer a job during the "American Band" sessions.
Checking around the Net just now I see that MF is no longer in the band. Both GFR & Farner still tour.

Hey, FF, maybe you could write the story!

"C'mon over baby, & get into my time machine" may be the appropriate quote here...

IMO that's an exaggeration.

Good idea. Yet another old heavy hitter GP ignores in favor of a ton of shallow, often nothing original, copiers or the same old faces.

Very funny, Taliesyn. It's hard to make everyone happy (duh), but it DOES crack me up that some forum peoples, e-mailers, and snail-mail writers FRY us for covering too many past-their-prime oldies, while about the same number of peeps SLAM us for "ignoring the old heavy hitters in favor of shallow copiers (or the same old faces)." Yeeeeow.

If you've read my more recent editor notes, you'll see that I'm NOT a great fan of the copiers, and I think we balance the "same old faces" with a fair amount of "new old faces," "old old faces," and "new faces." Just go back a few months and survey all the artists of all styles we've covered in the RIFFS and LESSONS sections. Wouldn't you agree there's a ton of diverse and different players peeking out from those pages? If you don't agree, then tell me where GP is going wrong, and I'll make sure we amend the situation for the better. I just need to know, specifically, how much diversity the readers feel is desired and appropriate.

As for Mark Farner -- I interviewed him a few years back, and we also profiled his Messenger guitar a while ago, as well. I'm a fan of Mr. Farner's, and I've had the pleasure of hanging with him at a few ROCK AND ROLL FANTASY CAMPs, and he absolutely deserves coverage. Thanks for the reminder. I'll check out if he's in the mood to talk to GP about any of his current projects, or if he'd be fine with detailing some of the classic GFR tracks. Either way, I'd be totally jazzed to talk to him again.

Cheers,
Mike

I've been reading GP since I was 16 or so (back in '69) and it has ALWAYS tried to balance up and coming talent and well-known artists, who we would hate to see forgotten!

Some of the artists covered didn't interest me at all, but hey, they must be of interest to SOMEONE!

Re: copiers - people who truly have a unique style are few and far between. This doesn't mean that the guy or gal can't PLAY!

Mark Farner would make for an interesting article. On the surface Grand Funk might have seemed a bit simplistic, but if you listen to the music, there are great songs there, really soulful playing and singing, and tons of attitude (I remember having "Live Album" as a kid, and the energy level there was over the top).
Go ahead, let's see some Farner in the mag!

I too have a bit of GFRR vinyl from my teen years tucked away in my collection. I think that Mark Farner and GFRR suffers from comparison with his contemporaries (and near contemporaties from the late sixties/early seventies) such as:
Hendrix
Cream
Beatles
The Who
Rolling Stones
Allman Brothers
Grateful Dead
Jefferson Airplane
etc., You get my drift.
Listening to him now, he sound pretty damn good, eapecially when compared with more recent fare. GFRR's problem is they didn't quite reach the heights of the other music being produced when they were in their heyday.

Back in the day when I started learning how to play lead guitar I listened to two people: Eric Clapton / Live Cream and Mark Farner / Red Album and Live album. They were my first influences who sent me out on a 40+ year journey with the guitar.

Everybody knows Clapton is God but Farner was just as cool IMHO. I saw Grand Funk in Canton, Ohio in 1970 with Glass Harp and Cactus. It was my first ever concert and I'll never forget it.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Mark around 1993 / 1994 when he was doing the Christian thing. A buddy of mine was a DJ at a local Christian radio station and he interviewed Mark on air. He got free tickets to the show and I went with him. I got to go on the bus and meet Mark who really was / is a real guitar hero to me and it was very cool. He is a very down to earth guy.

Editor Boy, you really should try to get in touch with Mark and do a cover story on him. While he may not be as technical as some other famous players, he played with feeling, soul, and emotion and he truly deserves a story about his time in the sun.
