I apologize for asking a dumb question, but how should I prepare music for a Bb clarinet for a praise band I'm in? As I understand it, a C played on a Bb instrument is the same note as a Bb on a piano, and therefore, music for the clarinet needs to be transposed up two semitones. Is that right? I imagine it takes a pretty experienced clarinet player to transpose on the fly. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Yup, that's the way you do it, IIRC.

Most people who play transposing instruments learn to transpose on the fly, because it's not always possible to find music in the right key. I remember I wasn't bad at it back in high school. However, YMMV.

I guess if you had a digital score, you could get the package to transpose the part for you and then print it out?

I suspect if the music is available digitally, it'll be because I entered it into Finale myself. The clarinet player hasn't played since high school when they provided music already transposed for her. Now that she wants to start playing music again, at least we know what to do. Thanks, Kramer!

Well, I don't know which piece you are trying to do, but perhaps you could find a .mid file and then hack away everything you don't want?

It might save you some data entry time, and you could transpose everything too \:\)
