Normally I go for traditional shaped basses, similar to Fender, but I do like the way this bass looks. The wood is striking, and the shape of the bouts is cool. Does it sound as good as it looks?

Wow that's great! I been following it's progress on Cliff's site. Keep us updated please, how it feels and it's tone.
I plan on following you this summer, putting in an order for a 5 string Ball bass.
Thanks for the pic.

I'll post clips when I get my hands on it. Dave do you ever get over to the UK? Actually I think the maple top is a lighter tone than this. But but ... roll on next week.
Don't forget this is a 20th wedding anniversary present. I've earned it!

What does it matter what we think? Do you like it?
That's a pretty bit of maple on top of that body. Looks great! I'm sure it will sound great as well.

Love it. Generally I lean towards traditional body shapes, but the wood really makes that bass. Can't wait for the full photo spread.

The three most important points to consider in order of priority: Tone, Looks and Feel... The first thing is a bass must sound great, since this is it's primary purpose. Second it must look good, since there's no biz like showbiz. And third, it must feel good for the musician playing it, and that's very important also. All three are important.
This one looks very good. I like original but practical shapes.

Interesting comments.
My philosophy for selecting a custom bass was to order a non-Fender lookalike bass. I have Fenders and I considered that a custom built bass should look like a custom built bass and not a Fender clone. Thus Carl Thompson and Cliff Bordwell were on my list as well as many others. The weak dollar meant that whilst the UK import tax is high the overall cost of a USA built bass was similar if not cheaper than a UK built bass.
I have played 100's of basses - literally - and whilst ordering a custom bass is a gamble I figured that having all the aspects of the bass to my spec would mean that the only real gamble would be that it didn't feel right in my hands. The accolades lavished on Cliff's basses for playability would seem to temper this concern.
Finally, I would say that the whole process takes a long time and so you have to be patient!
Happy New Year Davo

Good to be back. I've some serious playing to do as I haven't played for three weeks - not that it sounds very different - just that I'm loving playing so I might be around the forum a little less and around the fingerboard a little more.

Hmm, I've missed this thread as well. The bass looks stunning. What do all the knobs do? I am guessing 2 volume knobs for the pups, bass/mid/treble knobs, what about the switch? Shooting flames maybe?

I'm guessing Vol/Blend/Bass/Mid/Treble. Switch for active passive?
