I'm sure this has been brought up before, but I'm going to be lazy and just post a new topic instead of trying to search for it. So there! \:P

What are the legally acceptable ways a cover band can post recordings on MySpace band pages? I've heard MySpace doesn't take kindly to bands that post recordings of music for which they do not hold copyright.

I don't know how kindly MySpace takes to it, but I know there are plenty of bands that put covers on there.

That pretty much says you can't post a recording of someone else's song unless you get permission (i.e. a license).

IMHO, it's usually better to beg for forgivness than to ask for permission. Since you're not making any money off the myspace page, there's probably little they can do except make you take it down. But I'm not a lawyer; nor do I play one on T.V. Key word is "probably"

The answer is what's been said: it's specifically forbidden to put up unauthorized covers on a MySpace page. However, lots of bands seem to do it.

The thing to keep in mind is that it's very likely you won't only receive a warning, but your MySpace account might be terminated if there's even one complaint about it. Caveat emptor.
