If you want something simple to mix your bass and guitar, then go get a simple digital porta-studio. No need to go crazy with computers, mixers, software, and all that if you have a simple goal in mind. Tascam, Edirol, Roland, and numerous others have standalone recorders for just such a purpose, many with built-in CD burners and FX so you can record, mix, and burn without ever plugging anything else in.

How much do you want to spend? Do you have anything, mics, a computer, mixer, etc., currently?
If you have a computer now of reasonable power, for a couple hundred bucks you can get what is called an ADDA, analog to digital/digital to analog converter with a couple of preamps for mics built in, and software (that usually comes with these devices). With that and trusty Shure SM57 or 58, you're on your way. While I do not recommend using headphones for such, for your purposes, and to get you started you can use a pair of headphones for monitoring the tracks. Eventually I'd recommend getting some decent control room monitors, KRK and M-Audio have good ones for a few hundred.
Best of luck.
