I've been searching the internet high and low.....
The problem:
Load midi tracks into Cubase SE (everything is fine) Record each individually as an audio track (everything is fine)
When its time to record the vocals or any other audio while listening to (monitoring) the existing audio tracks, everything is being recorded including the existing aduio tracks.
I'm not sure if this is a soundcard issue. I know the that the recording audio track is picking up everything to include the other audio tracks and any other sound on the pc as a whole i.e. the sound of the mouse click.
As it is now I have the fantom 1/4 outs going into the 1/8 in on the stock cheap soundcard that came with the pc. The Fantom's usb via midi. thats how I translate the midi to the audio for the beat.
I then have to unplug the fantom from the soundcard and plug the mic in. Then connect headphones to the fantom out. Mute the audio on cubase. and record vocals while monitoring the midi via the heaphones from hte fantom.
Why is my audio in picking up everything. Hitting the monitor button on each track causes a bad echo.
There has to be a better way. I hope this is a sound card issue as I'm am graduating from the experimental phase to a new soundcard.

I'm guessing it's a soundcard issue. You should have an interface with a GUI that allows you to route the Cubase track output settings to any output that you want without looping. This includes the headphones and any digital outs. Might be time to break out the checkbook.
Best, Paul

The "bad echo" is called latency. Try reducing the latency within Cubase. While it's always going to be there, if your computer is powerful enough to run with only a few ms of latency, you won't notice it monitoring.
Another option is to get a small mixer, and route the analog outs to that, and use that for monitoring. Since you're not recording audio through it or mixing through it, a cheap Behringer one for $50 or so off Craigslist will do the job fine.

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking soundcard because in cubase it only gives me in1+in2 on the input dropdown and only bus 1, left, or right or the output selction dropdown.
The current sound card is very basic and does not allow me options for routing.
I'm being lead to believe that some less sophisticated soundcards automatically recycle any and all internal sounds (i.e. the mouse click etc.)as well as audio being recorded into the input of the card by default.

Mouse clicks and other such system related sounds can be disabled on most computers.

When you're ready, drop back here and I'm sure you'll get a bucketload of suggestions. You need to list the total RAM on the box, whether it has external USB2 and/or Firewire buses, and of course your price range. Lots of good stuff out there.

That's pretty much the bare-bones minimum, but it'll work. Two suggestions.
First, consider a portable interface rather than being locked into a bolt-in unit. As long as you have either a Firewire or USB2 bus, you'll thank yourself later.
Secondly, with the card you're considering you're gonna have to come up with a way to power your headphones/speakers for monitoring. This unit merely provides a line level(?) signal that will require a power amp to drive phones/speakers.
When you weigh the extra cost against a full function mobile unit such as the 410 or even this: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/AudiophileUSB-main.html , you'd probably actually end up paying more in the long run by buying the 192. I really like the M-Audio stuff. Take some time and go thru their list of portables.
Happy shopping, Paul

Presonus Firebox. 4 in/6 out analog (2 w/mic pres) plus 2/2 digital spdif, great latency free monitoring (with hp amp built in) for $300.

There is nothing wrong with your soundcard. You need to be in SRP mode, which is simoultaneous record and playback mode. Right now, you are looping the audio output back into the audio input internally. I imagine that any sound card made since 1993 has the capabulity to defeat this. I would suspect that you can do it from your audio control panel in Cubase.
