Hello all...long time musician here (hint...I saw the Beatles in concert) Anyway, I'm interested in picking up a camcorder for the purpose of recording live shows, making original music videos...etc.

I'm not neccessarily looking for the new high def camera's, as this is a bit more then I intend on spending, however, I would like a camcorder to have the following features...

Input for recording old VHS tapes off the tele.

External microphone input to enable the microphone to be in a different location than the camera.

The ability to record video without a soundtrack, which I could add later with software.

One or two decent condenser mic's within the camera itself.

Of course, decent audio and video recording quality with the ability to have an output from the camera into my computer.

If any of you have any suggestions...I'd appreciate it. I'd like to keep this purchase around the $600 dollar amount, but would consider going higher.

Whatever you get, make sure it has a true audio input (+4 or -10) not a mic input, so you have the option of recording straight off the board. Your sound quality ex post facto will be far better. Most of those cameras have really crappy internal microphones that will break up at high SPL's.

Hoot,

A liitle over a year ago, I picked up a Canon Mini DV camcorder(Optura 500) for around $600 that does what you're looking for. I don't think the Optura 500 is still offered, but you might find something here:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro...delTechSpecsAct

Canon offers downloads for documentation on each model.

Mine's not stereo capable, but recording without a soundtrack is a matter of turning off the internal mic. A beautiful little camera. Uses little, tiny video tapes!

BTW, according to this the 600 is stereo capable:

Best, Paul
