hi,
i'm deciding between audio technica's ath m50 or the pro700 headphones. it'll be used almost exclusively for home studio monitoring. i've seen the pro700 listed as professional monitor headphones and as dj headphones. as far as i understand a studio monitor headphone is supposed to produce pure, unadulterated sound. do dj headphones also provide unmodified sound or is it tweaked? thanks in advance.

Never tried the 700's, but I used to have several pair of the V600's - very nice cans.
Either way, if you're looking for something you can mix on, stop looking at cans, because it won't happen.

Couldn't agree more. Forget the cans, get some decent CR monitors, and acoustically tune your room.

i agree too, but the headphones are necessary when things need to be quiet.

Well, get used to the idea that you're not going to get accuracy from cans. Doesn't matter which ones you buy, they're going to be inaccurate, based on everything from how they fit on your ears to the sheer physics of reproducing low bass notes in a sub-2" driver.

Absolutely incorrect. Monitor levels need be no louder than your average TV listening levels to be accurate. Furthermore, low monitor levels are far more accurate than high levels. Mix at a low level, the mix will translate fine when cranked up, however mix at high levels and the mix will sound like crap when turned down.
Headphones are extremely deceiving, and aside from not being an accurate picture except when listening in headphones, can cause major ear fatigue very quickly as they give the false impression they are not loud.

I believe what beebop meant by "things need to be quiet" was that someone was sleeping in the next room or something like that.

I've your doing like...basic cut/paste edits in your DAW, or maybe you're trying to really "zoom in" audibly on one track to hunt down a buzz/hum/...etc... ...headphoes are fine for that, and actually might be better at finding individual problems.
But the minute you start messing with any multi-track mixing or applying any processing/FX... ...the headphones will fool you.
At any rate...if you have to work real quiet and headphones are your only options... ...just make sure that you use your monitors to re-check everything you've done with headphones...before you commit.
Oh...if you want a pair of inexpensive ($99 or less) but highly accurate heaphones...the Fostex T50RP are extremely good! They are semi-open back...so you never get that closed in feeling...and their frequency response is one of the best out there. I have three pairs.

They are not a good choice for tracking with multiple players due to the semi-open back, but I use them individually for tracking all the time. For those times when I need isolation and in a multi-user envirnoment...I have several pairs of the classic Koss Pro4AA....which are dynamite!

Matters not, unless they are an exceptionally light sleeper.

Indeed, between the Fletcher-Munson curve and simple physics (bass requires exponentially more energy to increase volume, where high frequencies don't need to move as much air), a pair of monitors is going to give you more balanced response at low volumes than high - particularly in the bass regions.

Miro,
Any problems with the relatively low impedance and multiple sets, or do you use a monitoring module?
Best, Paul

What you spend on headphones is moot. As previously discussed, the mixes will not translate properly to anything but headphones. Saveyour hard earned money, get some cheap phones, and plan on doing a lot of remixing to get it right if you insist on mixing on headphones only.
