...surprized me a bit. Usually, you have albums divided up into required, inpired and tired categories, and the reviewing is done by someone other than the artist. With McLaughlin, it was more like his favorite albums of his various career phases. Why the change?

Dear Picker...

Mr. McLaughlin offered to review his catalog for us personally, but (obviously) didn't want to slag any of his work. We felt that having the artist speak directly about his music superceded the format in this case. When a GP editor or freelancer writes the piece, it will still be divided into the three categories.

Best,
Mike

So freelancers could submit an Oeuvre Easy review and possibly get it published?

Dear Eric...

Absolutely. You'd have to pitch us, and we'd have to determine whether the piece hits our publication requirements, but we're happy to have other voices in the magazine. We don't pay great, but we DO pay for freelance submissions if we accept them.

Do you have an Oeuvre Easy pitch?

M

I can see why you guys would be glad to accept a submission from a guy like him.
Please understand, I'm not looking for your magazine to rip him (or anyone else) a new piehole or anything. I do have to admit I'm not the greatest fan he has, but that's not the issue. I just suspect he's dropped a few clunkers in his time, like everybody else. The Love Devotion & Surrender album he did with Carlos Santana comes to mind...

I gotta give him props for his technique, which is astounding. And there is no question regarding his dedication to the guitar and music in general. I've just never been all that whacked over what he does with what he has, which I understand is an entirely subjective matter. I wonder if anyone else feels the same, or if I'm just hopelessly uncool.

Is there any possibility of a review of McLaughlin's work from another source anytime in the future? Probably not this year, because he's already been featured recently, but maybe next year?

Sure. He's an artist that GP readers are definitely interested in hearing about, so we'll revisit him from time to time.

Cheers,
Mike
