Hi, I have problem with Cakewalk, i can't seem to play midi files using the software. The same happens when i try playback a midi recorded from my synth. I can see the pattern of bars in the Cakewalk midi window when i play the synth or when i just import a midi file. But there is no sound. The same midi file i can play using other software programs. It would be great if someone's got a clue what the pronblem is.

There's no sound because CW doesn't have a "default" generator to turn MIDI into sound.

You need to apply a DX synth like NI B4 or similar as the designated output for the MIDI channel.

Exactly how is the synth wired (connected) to the computer? Be specific.

I have a Korg synth and it is wired via a sound interface i tested all the wirings (the CW recognises my synth; i tried to play with midi setting changing the to omni, etcetera) I forgot to say i use CW Sonar LE 4 . Besides, even if something's wrong with the wirings, why the uploaded midis do not sound, though i can see the bar patterns for various instruments in different channels?

Thanks for your help

I forgot to add that the microphone sound recorded through the same interface is played back normally by CW

I hope you're aware that midi is a control format, not a sound source. A lotta folks don't realize this. We don't know your tech level, so this is kind of a primer. No offense intended.

Assuming the most basic setup, where the Korg is not only the midi controller(generates midi info via 'midi in' wire during recording), but also the sound source for playback, the connection back to the Korg has to be wired and set correctly. If you're using standard midi wires, two wires are required. Something like this:

Korg midi out > interface midi in (wire 1)
interface midi out > Korg midi in (wire 2)

Starting with the controller aspect, the Korg must be assigned a midi channel internally. Check the manual to see how to do this. Let's assume you assign channel 1. That's the channel I use for my controller. Makes life simple.

If the Korg has the ability to play only one sound, and the CW track is set to channel 1, you should be able to play and hear what you're playing, or recording, using that one sound. With everything set to channel 1, you should also hear what you've already recorded when playing back.

If the Korg has the ability to play different sounds on different channels, it's a multi-instrument keyboard.

The midi channel (lets assume channel 2) for the instrument on the track that you're recording, or have already recorded, has to be set to a channel that the Korg recognizes after being assigned to an internal voice. IOW, channel 2 must be assigned an instrument in order to hear it. Again, the Korg manual should explain how to assign different internal instruments to their own channel.

If the Korg is set for "Midi Receive: Omni On", then let's assume you have 16 instruments in the Korg, all assigned to different midi channels. If you want to record/hear the instrument assigned channel 13, then set to CW track channel to 13 also. The Korg will filter and use only info on channel 13. If you playback the track, and sequentially change the track's midi channel from 1 to 16, you'll assign the midi info to the proper instrument.

FWIW, CW should recognize whether or not the interface has more than one port. A single port (port 1) carries 16 channels. If more than 1 port is available, Port 2 would carry another 16 channels for a total of 32. And so on. If this is the case, you have to make sure that the channel AND the port are correct for the intended instrument.

Also, the audio and midi sections of CW are two unrelated systems. Because one works correctly, it doesn't mean the other will.

I think I kinda covered the basics. If you post back, include the Korg and the interface models. Take a peek here:
