Hello, everyone, I'm new on the forum here and am looking for some professional advice on a vocal microphone for recording. To start off, I'm not a vocalist: I play drums, guitar, and bass, and am working on my own material, and would rather have decent vox. as opposed to no vox.. The nicest vocal mic. I have ever used is an SM58, so, I don't know where to start looking.
I scream and occasionally rant; there's no singing going on here: think RKL, DRI, Guttermouth: very high pitched screaming (not low and on key like metal and modern rock). I've been using my Sennheiser e906 for vox., because that is the only mic. I have, but everyone who hears my material agrees that it sounds like the vocals are sung under a blanket, even when using the treble setting on the e906. I want to stay under $200, but I don't want to go bargain bin, either. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated!!

For your style of vocal, an SM58 or Beta58 is actually a very good choice. If you want to spend more, then I'd suggest a Shure SM7B, but that would be over your budget.

Thank you for your reply, audiorulez. Eh, I don't know about Shure. I owned an SM58 previously and it just sounds, how can I say this... dark. What about other brands like Audio Technica and AKG. I hear AKG products tend to have a lot of biting midrange to them, which sounds good for my vocals. How durable are AKG mics.? Should I just go with Shure, or is Shure overpriced?

A Beta58 will not be as dark as the SM58. Don't judge an entire brand based on one experience with one microphone.

No offense, but for what you're doing, pretty much any dynamic vocal mic will do. The 58 is about as durable as a tank, ande the PG58 Shure series are cheap enough that you could get a couple for when they do finally take a dump from abuse. Use a hp filter set around 150-200hz and it won't be too dark.

Well, after a researching a lot of different brands in my price range, the best mic. I've found is the Heil pr 20; at least it looks like the best in it's class, but then again, I'm no microphone expert. Unless anyone has any negative experiences with this mic. or with Heil in general, I'll probably go with it. Thoughts, anyone?

For the same price you can get a Beta58A.

With a good mic pre,the SM58 can really sound quite excellent. With an average pre it will sound, well, average.

I'm running right into an interface: a US-122L, and I'm recording with Cubase LE, so there is no preamp involved. It isn't that I think Shure is bad: an sm58 is the only mic. under $100 I'd consider using, but the Heil pr 20 specs seem superior in just about every regards, and I especially like the neodymium and iron/boron magnet, and the frequency response seems excellent as well. Other people I've asked seem to concur that the Heil pr 20 is in a league of it's own, so, I might pick one up in a month or two.

Hey,you can't have too many microphones. The point we are all trying to make here is that fidelity is not nessessarily a good thing when it comes to ranting and high pitched sreaming. The SM58 & 57 are excellent for those vocal aplications, the 57 does great double duty on snares, toms, guitar amps(hey that's quarduple duty?)though I am not too familiar with Heil mics.

The 122 is your mic pre.

Haha, my lack of vocal microphones shows. If I was a vocalist I might be embarrassed . On a recording forum I frequent, the administrator said that for my style of vocals, I should buy an Audix OM5 without even considering anything else, as this is attenuated at 125Hz and has ridiculous feedback rejection.

I think the Beta 58 is a lot better, cleaner, harder to drive into feedback and more accurate than the classic one.
I see this post is rather old. This place is hopping, man !!!

The Beta58 is the first version of the beta series, and IMHO is a POS. It has slightly more extended fq response and a hotter output than the SM58, however it was not very pleasing to the ears.
The Beta58A is the second generation of Beta mics in the 58 line, and is a much improved version of the original Beta58. Increased Fq response, and much more musical sounding than it's predecessor. It has a slightly hotter output than the original SM58, and a slightly tighter pattern, so gain before feedback is slightly better, however the extended high end range creates issues, and the overall difference in gain before feedback is minimal.
If it's loud in the monitors you're looking for, check out an Audix OM5 or 7. They IMHO sound like ass, but they get stoopid loud.
If it's quality and volume you desire, get yourself a Shure Beta57A.

...I was referring to the 58A, which is the only Beta I can acknowledge I've heard. Sorry for the confusion.

Check out it's younger brother, the 57A then. IMHO the best dynamic vocal mic ever made for live work.
