Hi,

I'm a newbie to this forum but I'd like to ask for a little help..

As part of my BA(hons) Recording Arts Major Research Project I am investigating the use of effects processors (both software and hardware) in the project/home studio. If you could spare 5 minutes to complete an online questionnaire I'd be most grateful.

The research aims to improve usability of hardware effects processors utilising the MIDI protocol.

Many thanks in advance.
AW

Hi AW,

I tried to answer to your questionnaire but it has some closed options that I don't know exactly how to select. The problem is that I use a very powerful dsp system, resident on a pci audiocards system (3 cascaded)which I regard as hardware stuff, although I.T.B.
I don't use any pure cpu calculated plugin, my use of Cubase SX is just for tracking and fades, being all the tracks independently routed to the dsp mixer.
So....anyway, the only outboard effects that I'm running completely out of the box are a Lexicon MPX 200, it works flawlessly via spdif I/O, and a Davoli-Krundaal vintage spring reverb connected to one analog I/O of one of the cards and processed in the dsp environment through a device I built (I'm a developer for the platform too) which shapes the spring effect according to some envelope follower and filter settings to change dimension and color.
Regarding the use of the MIDI protocol I think that it's very handy and somehow universal for patch changes, but it is far from a time critical efficiency....anyway, a well implemented MIDI system with the possibility to assign freely and "learn" CC's is a good solution overall. I just program in my sequencer the Prg. changes for the MPX 200, but usually it only happens before the start of the song.
I think another very important factor is the perfect wordclock management for the digital I/O's. The Lexicon MPX 200 receives it from the audiocard which is either master or slaved to some Apogee Converters and outputs a perfect signal to be fed back.
A good digital integration is the most important thing, repeated conversions always suck.

The last time I did one of these "research project" questionnaires, I got deluged with spam from every muso huckster on the internet.

Nothing personal, dude, but these pop up about every 3 months on this site, and every time it's the same story.

Same here, perhaps we did the same questionaire!!!!!!

I'd suggest to the poster to ask a few (2-3) specific questions that readers can reply to directly. Also, some specifics on what school you're going to might be a nice touch.
