Please no more interviews with Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, articles on Jaco, Bootsy, or Flea. Don’t get me wrong they are masters of the bass. They deserve a lot of recognition. But please I’m getting sick of getting issues each month and going "Oh another Geddy article, or oh another Claypool article." I’m just saying how about some others. There are so many other bass players out there then just them. Like for example why haven’t I seen a full article on Dan Maines of Clutch, Bobby Burns of Soulfly, hell Tom Araya of Slayer? All I’m looking for is a wide range of diversity.
But enough complaining. I love the magazine, even though it seems like every issue is the same anymore. One other thing I would love to see is more tabs. Most the songs I see in there are ehh... I just think you could put more in. Knowing now since Bassguitar magazine is no more. EXPAND!!!

More tabs?
Try another magazine - no tabs would be better.
You know the BP guys have to think about sales of the magazine when they decide who's on the cover.
If you want more metal and tab try Bass Guitar Magazine.

I'm happier without tabs. Standard notation all the way, in my humble opinion.
Sure, some of these guys appear a lot on the cover, but I also find that there is variation in how they're covered -- and that matters. The focus on "Havona" in the last issue is very cool, as well as having that finger-busting transcription (props to Jisi) in there (in standard notation!).
I've been really pleased with this issue. For example, Jonas Hellborg is really impressive, and it's great to see him in there and to read about how he thinks about music.
Also, the really hip thing in there this month is the photo of two of my favorites playing together -- QuestLove and JPJ!!! I would've loved to have heard that. Now, how do I get a blown up copy of that photo and then track down the two players for their signatures on it?!
Peace. --SW

Down with tabs.
I hardly think BP has overlapped very much about their coverage of high profile bassists. Let's see, I'm looking back on my collection I've amassed over the last 10 years and here's what I've got: 2 Geddy covers, 3 Jaco covers (including this months), 2 Bootsy covers and only 1 Flea now that's hardly overcoverage is it?

You dont like my favorite bass players? That really hurts.
by the way you forgot Chris Squire. I want more Chris Squire articles. As a subscriber to Bass Player Magazine I feel like I am a kind of stockholder... I offically use my shares to vote for more Chris Squire. I want close ups of his fingers on the fretboard. and an entire issue dedicated to his philosophy of groove.
If not I will still read the magazine cauze its cool. Where else can I see all the stuff I cant afford yet?
God Bless ya BPM.

Dont get me wrong i like these bass players. I just think there should be more interviews with more artists. Like one of my favorites as of late is Dan Maines of Clutch. If you listen to alot of his stuff its so different. The only thing i ever saw on him was a small little bit about the new CLutch album. I guess what i should have started the post about is "Why no Dan Maines". I just think Geddy, Bootsy, Flea, and Jaco have been played out in so many bass mags.
Plus this was just my view on things. When Bass guitar was still in production, They would have an article then Bass player would have the same artist. It was like a wow the same article again.
I would like to see some more tabs, mainly because im still staring out and its easier for me to learn those then sheet music or by ear.

Def-mike, I learned with tab when I first started 20 something years ago (though mostly by ear) and I really regret it. If I'd taken the time to read standard notation back then and spent all the time I spent reading tab on reading notes, my sight reading would be much more advanced now and I'd have a lot more, better and better paid gigs - seriously. Schoolkids manage to read standard notation. It's not that hard - it's just about putting in the time.
Spend 2 hours reading tab - get a few licks or Spend 2 hours reading standard notation - get a few licks and practise a transferable and employable skill.
It's your choice.

NO TABS!
One of the great things about Bass Player magazine is the lack of tabs.
If you take a tiny bit of time to learn to read standard notation, you'll be rewarded exponentially.

Really, the standard notation is already there. There is nothing preventing the motivated learning from using the notation, and for that matter, using the tab to help learn the notation.
IMHO

I have three children. The first (Guido, 9 years) and the second (Chiara 7 years) have been studying piano for a couple of years and they read quite well. This means that Chiara learned to read a grand staff before been able to write well or read other than capital letters. Now they are playing over a good portion of the staff and I wish I could read as well. They did not learn two keys separately as they taught me when I was in school, they started with the whole staff, from middle C up and down. This means for me that if you study notation you learn notation and it will help getting a professional gig.

Mongo is right. More Chris Squire. And I still mourn the day I sold my 4001. Ack. It digs at the most visceral part of my soul. Even though the truss rod was FUBAR.
Chewbubba is also right. Use the tab to help learn standard notation. I was blessed with the perfect teacher; he used tabs to inform where to reach for certain notes to make the whole thing flow; like teaching which alternate fingerings to use on a sax for a particular lick.
And I think a bass transcription of Steely Dan's "Josie" would be a cool thing. I just spent 45 minutes with it; it's not really hard, but is certainly a masterpiece. Chuck is sooo cool. More on Chuck would be wonderful. I know that's sort of off-topic, but don't stop me, baby! I'm on a roll!!!! Need more Chuck Rainey. How about a transcription of the "Sanford and Son" theme. Unfamiliar players could tape the tune off of Nick-at-Night instead of spending a buck on i-Tunes. Nothing funkier. Don't stop me; I'm still on a roll.....
Peace Paul K

I just got back from the mailbox. Chuck and Chris in one issue. Mongo, my friend, it is apparent that these people at B.P. can read our minds.
This is freaky. I am very afraid.
Peace Paul K PS B.P.: thanks.
