Hello all! This is my first post
I am having a problem with my home studio. basically my question is on how can i make the best use of a pair of JBL 4311 speakers for near-field mixing. I have no knowledge on speakers at all. Could anyone please give me some advice on :
1. for mixing, is it good to use the monitors with Marantz PM 44 SE? 2. how to place the speakers in a small room, and also the best orientation (straight up or laid down)
here's the pics of them:
Thank you!!

There's nothing inherently wrong with using the Marantz, except that you're adding an extra gain stage (in the form of the integrated pre-amp) that puts you one more step away from what's actually coming out of your DAW.
I used to use an Onkyo M-5000 amplifier on my monitors - it did fine. Mid-to-high-end consumer amps perform just as well as similarly priced pro amps.
So, to answer #1 - yes, you can, but it's not the best solution.
#2? Well, there's only so much you can do in that room. Regardless of your speaker choice, orientation, or anything else, you're in a terrible spot. Best advice I can offer would be to re-orient your mix station so the speakers are facing out from the corner, so at least the reflections will be relatively balanced.

Start by getting them further away from you and the wall. Minimum 24" from any vertical surface, and at least 5-6 feet from you. They are not nearfields, they are midfields, and need some distance to be accurate. Also, proper acoustic tuning of the control room is essential.

I guarantee he doesn't have the 8' from the walls you're asking for. This is a tiny room.

24" is 6 feet short of 8 feet.

But you want him to sit 5-6 feet away I'll wager this room isn't more than 8 feet any direction, by the look of it.

Impossible to tell from the pictures. This could be in a corner of a 400sq ft room for all we know.

Granted, that's pure speculation on my part, but look at the way everything is jammed together. If he had mountains of space, he'd likely be using it.

Or it's being used by something/one else. Without the room dimensions from the OP we have no idea.

True enough, and it appears we never will, as the OP hasn't returned.
