I am in the market for a great mic pre but I don't know which one to get. I haven't had the chance to go to my local audio store to A/B any of them so maybe you guys can give me some feedback. Some of you probably own, or have used these pres so any help is appreciated. My budget is $1100 to $1500.

Thanks

Where you really want to A/B is in your studio, where you know what the common denominator is. Find a Pro Audio Dealer that has a return policy allowing you to audition these pieces to determine which you prefer best.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the Avalon, and if I had to choose, for a generic pre would probably go with the Great River, although the VIntech is also a very nice piece, but IMHO it's a bit more colored than the GR.

Thanks audiorulez,

I've been hearing and reading alot of comments regarding the Great River products which I never really looked into before this last month. It seems like a general two thumbs up for their mic pre's. I may have to look into your suggestion of A/Bing in my studio for real. Are they really that good? The Vintech is also a hot item! Hmmmm.. choices. I'm planning on also buying a new mic to go with the new pre. Maybe a Neumann TLM49 or TLM 103. Any thoughts on those?

While a bit more money you might want to check out the GML pres also.

Never was much of neuman fan, except for the older/vintage ones.

Among other choices, I own the Great River. 'Great' is a good description.

Not a fan of the 103, but I did like the 127 okay.

I recently loaned my Korby Convertible and a GR MP2NV to a friend with a new studio. He has finally upgraded the other components in his room to where he can hear the difference and he came back raving, as did his second engineer, and they didn't want to give them back.

Here's the thing...quality is an insideous lover, causing us to spend spend spend if we are not careful, and wastuing a lot of money finding our way around. I suggest that you set a quality level for your proposed system, build a budget for it, and little by little aquire what you need; rather than just randomly buy stuff because ti is hot this week.

I'm partal to a great monitoring system,. because there is where you can hear what you do, and the quality in what you buy. The 'system' includes the DAs, amps, speakers, and room treatment.

Once you have that nailed, then look at a golden channel or two of mic/pre/ADC. Don't be in a hurry to buy, buy once, buy for the quality level you have set. (It makes little sense to spend $10,000 on a mic and use the plastic speakers that came with your computer...)

Agreed, a properly acoustically tuned control room, good monitors and the best converters you can afford are IMHO priorities over the front end. Matters not what you got for front end if you can't hear what it's giving you.

Thanks guys,
I recently put in some 4 inch thick bass traps and 2 inch thick panels in my room.
I agree 110% about the acoustics being very important. I also just got my hands on a pair of Dynaudio BM6a mkll's as an upgrade to my previous monitors. I tried to follow the suggestions that Ethan Winer on the other forum gave to me to do the acoustics in the room, now I just have to put my mixes to the test to see if they translate across the board well. So now I'm up to the Mic, the Pre, and perhaps a great converter. I'll def take my time with this. It's not like I'm Rockafella' lol:) with wads of cash. I'm just curious to hear what some of you are using to get an idea of why you chose a certain piece etc.

But again thanks for all the suggestions. Keep 'em coming!

I'm getting there one piece at a time. It's still a tough decision with the mic pre's though. As far as the Avalon M5 goes, I read that the production team The Underdogs
use it alot coupled with a Sony C800G mic (Mad expensive!). They recorded vocals for the movie Dream Girls through it. Must be very clean sounding. I'm gonna' go to Dale Pro Audio here in NY and A/B the mics and pres. I'll let you guys know which one I choose then save and get them.

Thanks again all.

The M5 is very clean, almost too clean, which is why I don't really like it.
