Oof, that really is some old school, rugged east coast ball going on in the Clev-Bos series. Extremely unpretty.
I'm starting to develop a mild fondness for Cleveland, not because of "The King" (show me a time EVER when MJ was shooting 25% from the field 4 games into a playoff series) but because of gutty guys like Verajao and Delonte West.
Though they are a pretty mighty defensive team, I just can't see the Cavs winning this series. Bet it goes 7, though.

We don't need to win one in this round either. OTOH, we've already won two road games this postseason.

Griffinator, obviously, aspects of Utah's game are quite appealing, such as the things that you describe. Their style isn't quite as exciting to me, but they're a really good team, no doubt.

Well, what harm does Jameer Nelson's ridiculous guarantee of a game 5 victory cause? None that I can tell. Detroit's gonna wrap it up tonight and put Chauncey on ice.
I loved Kevin Harlan's call of Lebron's monster slam late in the 4th last night: LeBron James with NO REGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE!"
Still I think that Doug Collins calling LeBron "the best player on the floor" even though he was shooting for sh*t was a bit of a company line. It was clearly Verajao on the boards and Gibson from three that won that game for Cleveland last night, that and Boston continuing to look old and bad on the road.
Tonight's NO/SA game is the most important game of the playoffs so far, and mark this: if the Spurs win tonight, they will repeat.

Detroit closed it out, with Tayshaun Prince blocking Turkoglu's last real shot (yeah, I know Orlando scored again, but that was garbage time at that point).

Looks like NO's got his one under control. Man they played a great third quarter. In my humble (right) opinion, thuggery played a part in this--they bullied the heart right out of TP in that first half.
I expect game 6 to be...lively. Tim Duncan's got to play more like Tim Duncan. He just doesn't look right. Of course the Hornets are soubling him, and of course, defense is the best part of Tyson Chandler's game, but this is Timmy Dunacn we're talking about here.
Congrats to the Pistons--six consecutive years in the Eastern Conference Finals. Wow.
I love Tayshaun Prince. You need a guy like that on a dream team.

Big win for the Hornets! 3-2!
Tony Parker was knocked down a lot.

Tony Parker was knocked down a lot. As a Suns fan, I feel obliged to say:
You live by the sword, you die by the sword.
Poetic justice.
Too bad it's the "little" guy who always gets battered around, though.
Best,
Geoff

I often have a lot of empathy for people. Maybe it's why I work in special education and do a bunch of volunteering for non-profit groups and all that.
But y'know, I just can't muster up much for TP. Largely because of the Suns/Horry perspective. Largely because no one is "forcing" TP to charge into a forest of seven-footers. Largely because I'm sure Eva will work out the knots. And largely because it'd seem odd after I did shout several times, "knock the twit down!!!!" during the game.
I didn't find, as Magpel said, that they "bullied the heart out of TP". No, like a Weeble, he kept coming back for more.

His spirit--and maybe parts of his body--were broken in the second half. I'm not urging anyone to sympathy. Just remove the names for a moment--is that the way you want ball played? If I a little guy is getting to the basket too easily, is it right for a team to go out on a (clearly) explicit mission to hit him hard an make him think twice about going into the paint?
Lord knows it happens all the time, but I still think it is a bit thuggish.

Well, yes, it is. At least it was what I was taught at the high school level. If a guy is constantly penetrating, make him think twice about continuing to do it.
But on a bigger picture, why is this worse than Hack-a-Shaq? Because Parker is a little, tiny 6'2" guy? He's a pro athlete who's paid a lot to be tough, and I think he usually IS tough. You can't let a guy walk all over you, and he will until he's made not to, which is what being competitive is all about.

First of all, I was joking when I was shouting that at the TV, and also here.
Second of all, it is unfortunately a big part of basketball. That's the way it was played when I played it, and that's definitely the way the NBA plays now.
I personally don't really care for it, and I dislike Hack-A-Shaq, people purposely stepping in to take charges, and a bunch of other things. Clear path fouls should have more severe consequences.
I think the NBA has a big problem with injuries. Look at the way we think about it. We now assume that a team is not going to be complete because of all the injuries.
But to answer your question, the way the rules and officiating are set up now, the answer to your question is unfortunately but unequivocally YES.

One more thing...I think that part of the injury factor is also that the damn regular season is too long.

Yeah you guys are right, of course I know the punishment is part of the game. I hate the Hack-a-Shaq too, but I think that's a very different kind of problem--a spirit vs. letter of the rule issue.
Except how to you get rid of it without trashing all forms of intentional foul in the process?

You ask a great question, Magpel. And I don't have an answer for that.
Earlier today, I mentioned that I really dislike people stepping in to take charges. I don't know how you stop that, or try and interpret the intent. I just know that some of that stuff I just don't like. And I despise the Hack-A-Shaq and all its permutations. Talk about ruining a game and doing something contrary to the spirit of the game. Instead of simply two free throws, the team that's fouled should also get the ball. Or something else that's more punitive.

Ugh--hate these west coast start times. I would love to stay up to watch the second half of what has been a ragged but fun game 5, but no way. Too many late nights wearing me down.
