Thanks for the props, Miroslav. J.J. did a great job with that, and it looks like we're the talk of the town with our August issue. I can't wait to see what people think about the September issue. If you think we stepped it up with Pete, wait until you see all the new things we have in store for you all in the next issue...

A huge thanks to Matt and Craig for getting the whole interview in the magazine. And major props to Matt for writing an excellent lead in.
Craig asked me to post the something about the spelling of Doug Sax's last name, which Pete himself spelled "Sachs":
"It was asked who proofreads EQ. In the case of this article, it would be me and managing editor Debbie Greenberg.
I have worked on projects that were mastered by Doug Sax, so I am well aware of him as a mastering engineer. However, it is usually a good practice not to assume anything when proofing. Pete Townshend specified the last name as "Sachs." J.J. Blair specified the last name as "Sachs." However, that seemed suspicious to me, so I googled Tannoy + Manley + Sachs (the context in which the name was mentioned in the article).
If you do this, the first entry that comes up is Outside Organization, whose clients include the Who, David Bowie, Prince, Chicane, P Diddy, Hilary Duff, Usher, Ronnie Wood, and many others. In other words, this is not some fan site. On the page http://www.outside-org.co.uk/index.php?/...tes_and_lyrics, it says "TubeTech analogue summing and three band compression were used to prepare ProTools files for Mastering to CD via Sadie at Metropolis. Manley 400 Watt Triode Tube Monoblock amplifiers and Manley-Doug Sachs 10” Tannoy speakers were used for critical monitoring along with various Dynaudio and Genelec speakers."
There are many other references to Doug Sachs on the net in a capacity of mastering engineer, and there are references to Sax as well.
I also googled Tannoy + Manley + Sax and got hits from that too. However, I am quite sure Pete Townshend is on more intimate terms with Sax/Sachs than I am, and if Townshend, the author of the piece, and the artist's publicity company all say that the name is spelled "Sachs," then regardless of how I thought it should be spelled, or the contradictory attributions on the net, I retained that spelling in the article.
Sometimes one has to make a judgement call based on the facts one has at hand. The process of proofing this one name and arriving at the conclusion above took about 20 minutes. There was not sufficient time to pursue the matter further.
I hope this clarifies one aspect of how the proofing process works.

JJ,
Yes indeed, fine piece of work. For the first time in ages I've been pointing out an EQ article for others to read.

Thanks for the head's up on this issue. I did enjoy the Pete Townshend interview. Although being quite new to the recording world some of the gear talk was a bit over my head. I liked the interview with Jack Endino as well. Good stuff! Gives me something to work on!

I think it shows great insight when the editorial staff can let the WHOLE interview run.
It made great reading (I still wanted it to continue) and hit a lot of the things I like - philosophy, gear, history, the present, musicianship, attitude. Nice work!

What lets the WHOLE interview run is when we have more readers and more advertisers, so we can have more pages.
Please get the word out on EQ so we can have MORE pages!!
