Hi guys,
two question that would help me out if I should buy the sattelite or not.
1. Can it be used as a stand alone mixer ?(or put in another way: can I hear the plugged in instruments/mics when my computer is shut down)
2. Latency, is it good? I use a lot of gigapiano, and would hate to have to much latency. Antoher thing, my mac mini only has one firewire connection, and I also have a fw harddisk. so the chain would be mac mini - harddisk - satellite , will this affect latency?
Thanks very much

1. No. 2. Latency is dependant on your computer. It's FW400 interface protocol, so its as good as it gets pretty much for external.
Latency is greatly reduced by using a second physical drive as you intend for your audio files. AD goes, as you plan, at the end of the FW chain.

Thanks very much for the fast reply!
Do I have to start up a sequencer in order to hear something?

It's not going to work very well if it's not on now is it?

Sorry, thats not what I meant to ask.
My first question was, can Ihear my instrument inputs when the computer is not on. You said no. So I was wandering If I could hear them if I just started up my computer, maybe the mackie would need a kind of driver to sound.
By the way, I did a little researh and dicovered that, unlike you said, indeed will work when the computer is off.
From the manual:
TO DAW Switch When the switch is down (INPUTS), channels 1 and 2 from the Onyx Satellite are routed to the control room outputs. This allows you to listen to whatever is con- nected to the Onyx Satellite without having a computer connected. Maybe you have a CD player or iPod con- nected to the Onyx Satellite and you want to listen to it through your control room monitor speakers. Voila! This is particularly useful when you have a home studio setup that does double-duty as a home stereo system.

That's throughput monitoring, not a mixer. Pretty much any ADDA will do that. You asked if you could use it as a stand alone mixer, not the same.
