Hi guys,

Just wandering : if I buy a fw-410 instead of an firewire solo, the difference is 100 euro's. I'm not buying for more options, just for better sound. Will the 410 sound (a lot) better?

Thanks

Doubtful. Since only the 1/2 inputs of the 410 are capable of sample rate at 192k, (it's not capable of monitoring at 192, 96k max). Most likely the pres are the same. All you're getting is more i/o. If you don't need it, save your money.

FWIW, I opted for a Presonus Firebox over the M-Audio stuff, IMHO it sounds way better.

Thanks for the reply

funny ... I just bought the firebox but the device was very noisy when recording...so I returned it.

Another thing that bothered me was that that the firebox got very hot after a while.

A shame, because I (also) heard a lot of great things about it.

Mine is quiet as a mouse. They will all get a bit warm, it's not a problem. I did have an issue with one FW port going south, but Presonus was Johnny on the spot and sent me a new unit right away. After that I've had no issues, and it sounds great.

The 0dbu reference of the Firebox is -20dbfs, which is what you should be targeting your nominal input levels to. If you were making the (very common) mistake of trying to hit just below 0dbfs, that's why it was noisy, 0dbfs out of the firebox is +28dbu!!!!!
