I'm looking to upgrade from my AT2020 which just isn't cutting it. I'm looking for a good microphone to give as rich of a sound as possible in the price range. The kind of vocals I'm recording would probably be similar to say Jack Johnson, simple lower deeper acoustic style. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. (I've been looking at the AT4047 it looks pretty good for the price)

In that price range...there are many brands... ...but off the top of my head...I think you should check out the ADK Hamburg (only about $250-$275) or their new A6 which is fits in-between the Hamburg (dark) and the Vienna (bright).
The ADK top-of-the line (TT/CE) are superb vocal mics, and that quality trickles down to the less expensive Hamburg/Vienna/A6. My go-to vocal is an ADK CE...which is great for lower/deeper voices. It doesn’t "fold" or get dull in the lower frequencies like some do. The Hamburg is also noted for being strong in the low end...something that often is the Achilles heal of other less-expensive mics.

If you don't mind a dynamic, the EV RE20. Perfect for that kind of voice, and a lot of regular instruments as well. Priced right in the middle of your $$ range.
Best, Paul

My choice for a dynamic would be an SM7B.

I have a Beta 58 and as far as recording goes it doesn't sound that great. I thought you're supposed to stick with condensers for recording (unless its live). I really trust audio-technica as far as quality. I've really been thinking about the AT4047 and now the A6 as well. It seems like both of these were intended for female vocals though, I never see any that were intended for the deeper male vox.

Beta58s are not designed for recording, they are live vocal mics. Not saying you can't record vocals or instruments with them, but you'll do much better in most cases with mics more suited for the studio.

When you said dynamic you didn't mean like a live performance mic, what did you mean?

I've really been thinking about the AT4047 and now the A6 as well... I never see any that were intended for the deeper male vox. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> A friend brought an AT4047 over a while back, and we set it up next to my Rode K2(~ same price). What we noticed was the rolloff on the 4047, when activated, was a lot steeper than the K2.. which has no switch. Without the rolloff, the 4047 was pretty darn bassy, and with it the rolloff was pretty extreme. The K2 has a fairly benign set rolloff, which I like for material rich in low content. It also has a transformerless output, and Rode really does match the best tube to the mic at production. No swaps to the best tube necessary. These things all make me glad I bought the K2. I've included links to the response charts if you want to take a look. The 4047 also tends to ephasize the requisite high end more so than the K2, making the K2 appear to be smoother sounding. Make no mistake, they both sound good. I'd just recommend trying the K2 before buying anything.

If you never tried other tubes in the K2, how do you know it sounds better?
There's no set rolloff on the K2, it just happens to not have a major proximity effect. The NTK has no rolloff either.
I'd be willing to bet the K2 would sound killer with a difererent tube, such as the 6922 gold. I've used them stock, they were nice but, like the stock NTK, very edgey around 5-6Khz. The 6922 tames that nicely, and gives the low end between 100-250 a nice, natural tone.

If you never tried other tubes in the K2, how do you know it sounds better? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I look at it this way. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Fact is, I really like the sound of the K2 as it comes from the factory. With regard to changing tubes, I wondered why guys keep trying to improve it. I posted the question at http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/ in Klaus Heyes's mic forum a few days ago. Virtually every reply to other similar threads bore out what I thought. It's pretty much optimized from the factory. Even Klaus said so, and I guarantee you he knows way more about the specifics that you and I combined.
There's no set rolloff on the K2, it just happens to not have a major proximity effect. The NTK has no rolloff either. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> We must be listening to two different K2s. The only rub I have against the K2 is proximity effect. I find I need to keep the singer 12-18" minimum from the mic, and always have a pop filter (or 2, depending on the singer) in place. The response chart link that I posted bears that out. There's almost no rolloff in any mode.
I'd be willing to bet the K2 would sound killer with a different tube, such as the 6922 gold. I've used them stock, they were nice but, like the stock NTK, very edgey around 5-6Khz. The 6922 tames that nicely, and gives the low end between 100-250 a nice, natural tone. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mabee you've found a diamond in the coal with the 6922, but from the feedback I've gotten it's good stock. I'll pass your suggestion along. The 'edginess' is pretty much a product of the 'cardioid' setting, and I don't find it excessive like the majority of 'hyped' condensers out there. No changes in this locker room .

Fact is, your K2 is an upgrade of previous mics design. If your approach was taken, it never would have been developed.
It's called improvement, but then you're perfect so you wouldn't know about that would you aw?

Well, the hope is that he realizes that he's not the only one on this board with some experience to offer, and makes a go at interacting, instead of lecturing and being sarcastic.

Hey Griff, I've been accused of a lot of things, but being 'perfect' sure isn't one of them ! Hell, just read my signature. Anyone that comes on like that, and can't back up what he says doesn't deserve a reply.
However I did back it up, since we have actually tried other tubes and heard the improvement. Furthermore, it was actually Phil O'Keefe's forum that I got the suggestion from AW, and hey, newsflash, I am that guy, so up yours. Enjoy your ignorant rut stuck life. I'll enjoy constant striving for improvement.
