I've built myself a jazz bass from Warmoth parts and I can tell you it's really great. Here's what it looks like:

It has a korina body, flame maple neck with rosewood fingerboard and EMG 35DC pickups.

At Warmoth you get a chance to get a great custom Made-In-America bass for about $1000. It takes some skill and I couldn't have made it on my own. But I'm fortunate enough to have a friend who knows his way around electronics.

The Warmoth parts are of excellent finish and craftmanship and fit very snugly together. And the people at Warmoth have always been very friendly and forthcoming when I've dealt with them.

So here's a suggestion: Order the needed parts from Warmoth and build your own custom bass, documenting the build process and how it turns out in the end.

Are you up for the challenge? :-)

+1 on our friend from Norway's suggestion. It'd be way cool. Maybe a monthly series of sorts using Carvin Neck-through parts (not the bolt on kit....too easy....), Warmoth parts, eBay parts, and a couple others.
Peace

Hmmm... sort of like "Iron Chef" or something- give a couple of bassists (or luthiers) $X do scope out parts online, or a stockpile of existing parts, and have them make a gourmet meal... er, bass out of it.

This is actually a pretty cool idea if you have the budget for it.

Cover all the bases, shielding, soldering, bridge alignment, etc.
