I am on the lookout for a small PA, as I am will, within the next two months be gigging with a singer, (with me on my trusty Yamaha p60!). And I am after a lightweight PA that can cope with small pubs/bars. (something we can easily transport accross town on foot if need be)
After reading on here all the posts regarding the stagepas300 I am thinking now that this might not be the best I can get due to the apaprently low bass output.
As such my search widended and I cam across this....
http://namm.harmony-central.com/SNAMM06/Content/ALTO/PR/OEX400.html

This seems to fit the bill, similar cost, similar power, similar specs, but it does have TEN inch speakers and not 8 inch as with the Yamaha, my thinking is that this will be able to cope better with the piano's low end.
After doing a search on this forum it appears that no one else has spoken about it before.

So...
Has anyone tried this out before? Heard and good/bad stories about it? But also are there any other small portable PA's that any one recmmends withon this very budget price range?

Any feedback would be very welcome.

Regards
Rossi46.

Too small for anything but a coffee shop.

As to other options "in this price range" - same problem.

Good speakers and ample power cost money. No avoiding it, bro.

NOOOOO! Don't say that Griffin! lol.

So what do people recommend for a PA to run Vocals+Keys through? The main criteria is light weight and portability. We will only be playing to small pubs/bars (open mic type things) - so anything upto 50 people I guess on average.

JBL EON 15 powered speakers 150 watts @ 2ohms-$400 ea??/2 speaker stands $75.00ea??/used mixer $maybe 150 or 200 bucks.

I have a couple of EON15's and occasionally use them with an old 16ch. Peavey from the old days and it sounds great even on bass guitar.

If you want to sound good-don't get the cheapest thing you can find-you will regret it if you do. You could always use the EON's for monitors after you are able to upgrade to something bigger.

Well put, Randal.

Heck, Yamaha's got some stout 16-channel rackmount mixers in the $300 range - and believe it or not, those little MG's will take a BEATING - I know - I had one of the little $100 10-channel jobbers and we put it through the wringer - spilled beer, cigarette ash, you name it - finally crapped out after someone dumped half a beer right down the mic inputs - fried the board - but not before it took 3 years worth of serious abuse!

Forgetting volume output for a second, do people feel that stereo 10" speakers kick out an approriate amount of bass for general rompler keyboard sounds?

I've never been able to test out dual 10" speakers but the 12" monos i've tried would be enough bass for me.

Sorry if i'm thread hijacking rossi, the JBL EON G2 10" just seem like a nice solution i'm just trying to see if it's viable.

Obviously, the low-end excursion on a 10" is not going to be as deep as that of a 12", but the difference in a live situation will be negligible.

A low profile choice might be the EV360SXa .

Our own Jazz + is a + endorser. I've used them in a sub situtation and they sounded great.(to me, better quality than those Eon 10's and the Mackie 450's) I think they are in the 33-35 lb. range.

They can be hard to find to demo and they're $$$ !! (a little under $1900 for a pair)

When the time comes, they will be a contender. JBL has a fairly new active speaker that I just used on a gig. The MX something (see Powered Spkr. thread, there's a pic and short review).... that was good but heavier. (40lbs. I think)

I'm not sure I'd like anything smaller than 15" for bass.

Randal's got a good point. Spring for quality. I prefer Crown amps because they're so bullet proof...literally. When I was on the road we had a Crown DC300A that had a .22 bullet hole in the transformer cover. I had a D150 that lasted for 12 years of hard use after I bought it, and I bought it used. So now I'm still using Crown.

A couple of points in the favor of powered EONS is they are relatively small and they weigh around 40 lbs-not much when you compare them to the monstrous cabs we used in the 70's. I can get my entire campact rig in the bed of my small pickup truck (speakers, rack, mixer, stands, guitars, keys, or whatever else I might need) and still have room to stack other things on top. They have a 15" speaker which gives plenty of bottom end response--bass & keys really need it to fill up even a modest sized room. I have used mine several times in a gymnasium and other comparable sized rooms and two were plenty for low volume tunes easy to listen to or they can get loud if needed as well. Like I said yesterday, I am very well pleased with mine. Until I was able to get a larger JBL system, I used 4 of them. I sold two of them and bought my Crown poweramp.

I see that Rossi is located in England but I am assuming that JBL products are available there as well.
