Alright guys! I just bought some KRK Systems Rockit RP-5's for 200 bucks even (brand new!)

I was debating between those and a pair of M-Audio BX5a's for 197 dollars even.

The M-Audio's have liquid cooling and so on. Kevlar cone, silk tweeter, rear bass port, etc.

The KRK's have neodynium drivers, etc.

So before this place closes (one day sale), I need to know if I made the right choice here. I was told the KRK's have a much cleaner sound (and I know they have a thicker low end) but the M-Audio's sound great too! I'm not sure what to do here. They close @ 5 CDT.

I know a lot of prominent people use the BX5a's (such as BT), but I also know M-Audio goes to town sponsoring people.

What are your thoughts?

Memorial Day is not the best day to be asking this, JOnathan. But assuming you kept the KRKs, you made a great deal and should do fine. If you switched at the last minute to the BX5as, you should do fine too. I've read good things about both monitors, although there seem to be more negatives attached to the M-Audios. Depends who you ask, apparently. When the BX5as appeared, a featured review in Keyboard mag (or was it Electronic Musician?) gave them a definite thumbs up.

Incidentally, who is BT?

When was the last time you saw a negative review of semi-pro studio kit in any magazine?

I gave up reading the "professional" audio magazines because I got sick of reading their "reviews" that were nothing more than PR shilling for whatever company schlepped gear on them and took out a full-page to advert it this month...

Depends on how you define "negative." If you will allow by "negative" responsible reporting of flaws, then the answer is plenty of times.

But the summation is always "It's great for the money!" - that's not responsible reporting, it's sponsor ass-kissing.

How so? If it's great for the money, then it's great for the money.

What Griff is saying is that many reviewers are just putting a positive spin on everything by using that perspective.

As in...it's not really a great XYZ product as far as all XYZ products are concerned...BUT...being that it costs so little, then it's good..."great for the money".

By using that perspective, the reviewers can make it appear that even a $100 pair of monitors are as good a $10,000 pair...JUST by suggesting that your getting a great deal for $100.
But the reality is...if you placed those $100 monitors even next to a pair of even moderately expensive ones...the "good for the money" monitors would obviously SUCK. \:\)

You posted this same piece in the keyboard thread and got responses. Hopefully they were enough and your happy with the decision you made. As for objective reviews in pro audio magazines I couldn't agree more. There's no way these magazines are going to bite the hand that feeds them.

The Rockit 5's are IMHO the best small monitor going. Excellent and accurate response, small footprint, very easy on the ears. Highly recommended.
