EQ, June 2007; page 27:
photo caption Fig.2:
"Setting your monitors at 60º angles from your listening point is of penultimate importance when it's time to really listen."
so, as penultimate means 'next to last', what does this caption mean?

The next to the last in the succession of important things you must do before you start to mix--with the last, of course, being "listening" to your tracks and the first, per the theme of the issue, being treating your live room and your mixing area to get good sounds and good perspectives in the first place. 
Admittedly, I probably could have worded that a little differently...

The most important thing is to treat your room (the old adage that a great sound starts in the room) otherwise you end up with a terrible sounding recording that no amount of mix trickery will rectify. If you record in a room that isn't treated well, you might as well just turn your speakers 140 degrees away from each other and put your head in the trashcan to mix, auto-tune all the vocals, pan all your guitar tracks straight down the middle, replace all your kicks with sampled typewriters plugging away on wet paper, etc. etc. etc.
