Some of my pals and I are involved in something called Second Life. It's basically a virtual world where you can walk around (or fly around, for that matter), build things, script things, interact with other folks and so on. Kind of like the Internet, in a 3D environment.

Anyway, I played a solo acoustic gig there yesterday, and I have to say, it went really well! Had an audience of about 40-50 people. Got some good tips in my virtual tip jar. If any of you are more interested in this, we're trying to get a forum together here on MP for gigging in the virtual world. It's a trip, I'll tell you that much. You're also welcome to ask me more about it, of course.

Here was my set list:

- Free Man In Paris (Joni Mitchell)
- Summer Breeze (Seals and Crofts)
- Old Man (Neil Young)
- Save It For Later (English Beat)
- Redemption Song (Bob Marley)
- Any Major Dude (Steely Dan)
- Behind Blue Eyes (The Who)
- California (Joni Mitchell)
- Heart of Gold (Neil Young)
- Comes a Time (Neil Young)
- This Afternoon (Jeff Klopmeyer)
- Wonderwall (Oasis)
- Six Underground (Sneaker Pimps)
- Ohio (Neil Young)
- Court & Spark (Joni Mitchell)

OK, I "get" the cowboy hat now. Methinks thou art a Neil Young fan.

This seems like a real interesting idea. So let's see if I get this right - you play a gig, they tip you in virtual dollars that you can convert to real dollars? Almost makes you wonder about the virtual exchange rate?! OK, let's put the cynic aside. It still seems cool. How did you set up the gig? We could have fun with this. Can you imagine a bunch of us putting together an online virtual band?

Jay

I've always been a Neil fan, but ever since I got the Marrtin and the harmomnicas, I'm almost obsessively compelled to play his stuff. \:\)

Yes, the virtual dollars can be converted to real dollars. Granted, the scale is low: right now the exchange is about $272/$1. So, I made probably $7 USD in tips yesterday, and spent $2 for the broadcast stream, and paid my son $5 to get out of the house during my "gig", so I guess I broke even. \:D

But it was fun and I had a bigger crowd than I would have in real life. And the people were very appreciative. It was a fun experience.

Forgot to mention: my pal (and former moderator here) Lee Flier wrote an article in EQ Magazine this month on gigging in Second Life. Her band "What The...?" has played several shows in SL. She was at my gig yesterday, which is always cool.

OK, that makes sense. I had never heard of it before, and navigating around the site yesterday, I couldn't fuigure out how to even start setting up a gig. So, now it all becomes clear. I will have to check out EQ. It seems to have potential.

Here's Lee's article in EQ:

First Look At A Second Life

In the photo, she's actually playing with What The...? in the virtual club my girlfriend and I own there. \:\)

Thanks for the link to the article, my subscription ot EQ ran out a few months ago, apparently, and I didn't have that issue.

Sounds very cool. I may start lurking there. Post if you have another performance, I would love to watch.

You have a great thing going on here. I can dig how you can get an international audience at every gig and how it could really develop into something quite large.

A virtual concert amphitheater to host concerts of SL bands....

Shoot, no more stage fright for those whom don't like performing for large crowds.
