Just a reminder during this artic spell. Watch out for equipment especially guitars. I remember seranading a girl when I was about 18 and left my 1964 Gibson Dove acoustic out in the car because I got home late. Needless to say the cold weather spidered the beatiful guitars finish. Little hairline cracks everywhere in the laquer \:o \:\( Okay... lessoned learned.

Cold weather is hard is tough on wood and plastics so be careful. If you come in from the cold with your guitar, let the case warm up to the room temp before opening the case.Be careful handling plastic cases or equipment made of plastic. They can get hard and brittle in the cold.chip and break with minimum force.

This comment has remarkable timing.

I just purchased (stop your jealousy now) a Martin D-18V from a gent who lives on the east coast. He was about to ship me the guitar, but then called me to ask if he should wait a little while. It's minus 5 degrees with wind chill where he is, and wasn't too confident about having a fine acoustic exposed in any way to that bitter cold if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

I thanked him for his foresight, and told him that I'd lived without the Martin for about 30 years of playing guitar, so a few more days (until it warms up to the 30s/40s) won't hurt me in the slightest.

I'm going to start another thread on a more general basis about Stuff that Will Screw Up Your Gear. But cold weather is certainly high on the list! Thanks Trill.

SWEET

I love the sound of an old Martin. In this area the old dreadnoughts are a main staple and the Holy Grail for bluegrassers

The wind chill is not a problem...as long as the shipping service doesn't keep packages sitting around in any room/vehicle that has NO temp control at all.

And what's really a concern is that UPS/FedEx shows up in the morning when no one is there to accept delivery...and they just leave it on your doorstep when it's 10 degrees outside...or 90 degrees...or pouring rain!

I think in a case with bubble wrap and double box will be OK...and maybe have him toss a wet sponge in an open baggie, inside the case...and that will at least keep the wood from really drying out.

Heck...have it shipped 2-day express...and insured for the FULL value!

Well how the hell do they work in a storage facility with no heat when it gets this cold (it's 10 degrees F here)...?

I would think all the shippers try to move parcels as fast as they can...so there really isn't any "storage" happening in some empty warehouse with no heat.

Only thing would be the shipping trucks...most have no heat that I know of in the trailers....and on a log runs...the stuff will get cold.
