I just wanted to draw attention to the use of some creative statistics in Moses Avalon's recent article on the future of music distribution.
While it serves his point to conclude that only about 1% of CDBaby members are profitable (sold more than 12 units), it doesn't fit the numbers he provides. If Soundscan only tracked 4000+ titles, of which 700 were profitable, then it is more like 17-18%. Tempting as it may be, we can't assume the untracked 66,000 or so members were also unprofitable.
Otherwise it was an interesting and informative article. I'm no raving fan of CDBaby but they at least deserve an accurate appraisal of their service.
