I just recieved the Sept '06 copy of EQ. I found something in the issue that raised some serious issues with a few of the others that I showed the article to.

First off, I 've been involved in live music as well as some studio work of the last 15+ years. Prior to that I was in the video -post engineeering field.

I look forward to the magazine as it provides a lot of very good ideas and hints that I use in live settings. One thing that I read in the article "Recording Acoustic Drums", by Jay Graydon was the endorsment of duct tape repeatedly in his piece. As soon as I read the article, I gave it to a couple of friends who run sound in the area. Both immediatly did a "WTF?!?"

What I 'm referring to is Jay's use of duct tape. If I took a roll of duct tape into most live venues or studios I deal with, the house guys will grab it from you and toss it in the trash.

Duct tape leaves so much residue on cables, carpet, boards, etc that a heavy rag and a can of WD-40 are in your near future.

Any technician or engineer should NEVER use duct tape for simply taping down cables. This is what Gaffers tape is for. No residue. Comes up easily and hold stuff in place.

Now I mat be over-reacting to someone's use of a generic term, but I have spent many hours cleaning beer, schnapps, Tuaca, Jaeger and other (body) fluids from my cables. Nothing pisses me off more than a musician or guest sound guy using duct tape to put cables in place. Even worse is the use if it as a cable strap.

Jay, I hope you meant GAFF tape! If not, I will gladly send you a roll of it.

You are right, and I have to take some of the blame because as the editor of the piece, I use the term "duct tape" generically, and Jay does too (and I suspect we're not the only ones). So, point well-taken, and thanks for writing in to clarify that duct tape and gaffer's tape do have distinct names and identities.

And you've inspired me to say "tissue" in the future instead of "Kleenex," and I'll "overnight" packages instead of "Fed Exing" them...unless I'm actually using Fed Ex! \:\)

Make a few Xeroxes of this and distribute it to all staff.

And there are time when you DO use duct tape! If you ever have to 'pad' a flappy tom skin or the ole' wallet on the snare...gaffer won't hold up for some of those. Cabling, carpet, you bet- gaffer all the way.
But it was and still is coined "rock and roll tape" (and we ain't talkin' 456)!
