Hey,
I've been a Bass Player reader since near the beginning of it's existance.I have a few suggestions about cover stories for Bass Player. I have noticed that there's very little information on the internet about Pino Palladino and Willie Weeks. Granted, Bass Player has conducted two very excellent interviews with these bass giants a few years back. Having said that, I think BP should conduct new interviews with Weeks and Palladino.
There's virtually no info on the net for Willie Weeks. He doesn't have a website and the only interview I could find on the net was the one he did for BP. Since that interview, he has worked on a number on projets and is currently touring with Eric Clapton. It would be interesting to get an updated interview with him.
The same can be said for Pino Palladino. Since his last interview, he's toured with The Who again and recorded on their new album. He's also recorded and toured with John Mayer.
Also,I would suggest a cover story on Joe Osbourne (who, to my knowledge, has never been granted a cover story) and Will Lee (who's been on the cover but interviewing Chuck Rainey. It would be great to read a detailed interview about his career as a session great as well as his career working on a late night talk show. I'm sure he must have some funny Letterman stories to share.)
Thanks for reading and keep up the good work.

Where you been? Pino was just on the cover for I think the second time in a year or two! You'd better update your subscription my friend.

My bad. A friend just e-mailed me stating that Pino's on the cover this month!!!I'll be buying the issue for sure.
No, I don't have a subscription to BASS PLAYER. I have many of the old issues but I stopped collecting them a few years back. Now I buy them on the strenght of the cover story.
Now for Willie Weeks......

Thanks for the suggestions, but in addition to missing this month's Pino story, you must have missed the big Willie Weeks story we did last year. We even transcribed his solo on Donnie Hathaway's "Voices Inside (Everything is Everything)." Call our back issues service (800-444-4881 if you're in the U.S., 785-838-7500 outside) and order the August '05 issue, which has Daryl Jones on the cover. While you're at it, ask for the March '04 issue, which also had Pino on the cover, and May '00, which has a feature on Pino's stellar work with D'Angelo.
And for goodness sake, subscribe already!

Thanks Bill,
I bought the November issue of Bass Player (Pino) yesterday as well as BP presents Bass Giants. I must say, it's an excellent issue from start to finish. I also have the August 2005 issue with the Willie Weeks feature. That interview is one of my favourites. I was hoping for another one soon or in the new year.
I love your website however I think you should have a section of the site dedicated to all of your back issues including the cover and content of the magazine. I know that in the old issues, they had a section in the back of the magazine reserved for back issues. Please forgive me if you already do, however I couldn't find it. I could just find a number to place an order (and it's hard to place an order if you don't know what month you're looking for).
Thanks once again, having Pino on this month's cover inspired me to practice all night. The issue only arrived in my city yesterday. I had no idea Pino was on the cover because your website still had Steve Harris (last month)on it. Keep up the good work.

I love Bass Player mag and the Covers of older well established Bass Players. Every once in a while I would like to see up and coming Bassists like Adam Nitti, Brady Muckelroy, etc. and get the lowdown before they hit it big.

How about an interview with Peter Cetera with Chicago?
I would love to hear what he has to say. One of my favorite players.

First time subscriber, and bassist of only a handful of years but I got a suggestion for an excellent cover story. I would really like to see Roger Waters on an issue sometime soon. I live in Chicago and hes coming to town in June, so I think it would be great to hear what's new in his head. Also he is putting out a new album so details on that would be really cool.

Might be interesting to see a very practical piece on gigging. Not necessarily a cover story, though.
The piece could include topics such as: -Gigbag essentials -EQing for the room -Efficient load-in/load-out -Managing your volume (band member balance; FOH vs stage) -And other topics I can't think of at the moment
Some of this might be affected by considerations of backlines vs non-backlined venues. Also, maybe a mix of celebs and "regular joes" could comment on their own gig concerns/practicialities.
Also, it would be very cool to get some commentary from folks running sound at various clubs. How do they think about bass in rooms they work? How can bassists ruin their night? (I.e., what do bassists sometimes do that make them go, "Oh $#!%"?) How can bassists help their night run better? (I.e., what can bassists do that make them go, "Right on!") Maybe some of those interviews could make it to BPTV -- I'm sure there would be a mix of useful and funny materials.
Just thinking out loud.
Peace. --SW

Nice idea.
I think that a Rickey Minor cover might sell well and be musically valuable right now too.

It would be really interesting to read something up on Paul Simonon especially because of his "pioneering" days (of punk music) with The Clash.
Peace, Corey

Hi Corey,
Paul is one of my favorite punk bassists. He started playing with the band as a complete beginner and developed a unique style which had a lasting, powerful effect on bass playing. I wrote a large feature on Paul Simonon in our August 2003 issue. It was the first time he spoke to a musician magazine about how he developed as a player.
This doesn't include the photos, but you can read the story online, here: http://www.bassplayer.com/story.asp?sectioncode=21&storycode=3974

I agree. Roger is a visionary in a lot of ways. He might not have the most dazzling bass technique ever heard, but he is a standing testament that the guitar players and singers aren't the only people in the band gifted at writing material.

Find out who played bass on Lefty Frizzell's 1962 tour of Oklahoma. And put him on the cover. I would really like to know more about him, whoever he is. Thanks, Mongo.

Peter Cetera was a phenomenal bass player for many years. His contributions as an electric bassist have always been overshadowed by his incredible voice, and the fact that Chicago was only perceived as "hip" for a short time, even though they made great music on many levels, for a very long time. Cetera equates his bass playing with the years he spent with the band, and that's the one subject he really doesn't want to be interviewed about, unfortunately. One day, maybe he'll realize how many of us low-enders he influenced and just how much his playing blew us all away.

Why not an article about Genesis bass player Mike Rutherford, or the great French rocker Patrick Djivas who plays for the seminal Italian prog-rock kings PFM? Why not Greg Lake? How about the late Uriah Heep bassist Gary Thain? Another one? How about Tim Bogert!
Here is one for you, although I will admit it is obscure, Stefano Urso bassist for the Italian progressive rock band Rovescio Della Medaglia (RDM). In 1976 my family was in Italy, I was 18 at the time and I had the typical American attitude, you know? The world revolves around the USA kind of attitude. I had made friends with some kids my age and they asked me if I had ever heard “il Rovescio?” Do they sing in English? Anyway, I went to see RDM with them, and I was blown away. RDM performed their album Contaminazione (Contamination in English). The entire album is based on Bach’s “Well Tempered Harpsichord”, although that is a somewhat simplistic description; let’s just say that you have to hear it. To say that I was totally blown away is an understatement; Stefano Urso was playing all these Bach based lines on his Gibson Triumph bass with a mastery that defies description, and the rest of those guys were not exactly slouches either. I bought that album just as quickly as I could make it to a music store and I found myself obsessing over Bach, RDM, and those fantastic bass lines for years afterwards; I still draw inspiration from Stefano.
For those of you guys that are not familiar with RDM, you are missing out. Check out these links, get yourself a copy of "Contamination" and be prepared to be floored!

It might be interesting to have an issue focus on notable bassists from countries where English is not the primary language. This might really provide some exposure of some players mostly unknown to what I'm guessing is probably a predominantly US, Canadian, and UK subscription base.
I'm not sure how you'd develop such a list, but Mario above has suggested some Italians, and maybe there are similar magazines for bass players in countries in other continents.
While we get the occasional piece about a Cameroonian or French or Norwegian player, it would be interesting to read an issue focsued on bass around the globe.
Peace. --SW

Ah yes, another one. Tim Bogert, what a monster; let's go to jazz for a minute, how about Alphonso Johnson? Give me a chance an I will think of few more that would be far more interesting than some of the insipid choices that I have seen lately!

Greg Lake was on the cover of the September, 1974 issue of Guitar Player. You may be thinking how I remembered that? There was an article on my wife, Lady Bo in that issue.

I thought Ric F, was US born. I might be wrong though. My bust, that was a typo, although Ric is of Italian extraction, as is Pino Palladino and Rocco Prestia, which reminds me, how about Felix Pappalardi?
