Hello,
First, I would like to thank you guys and gals for doing what you do!
I'm a twenty-eight year old full time professional bassist(solo and sideman)and instructor in VT and I grew up on your magazine(I have about 75 back issues or so). I love what you guys do, but I feel like I have been seeing the same 15 or 20 bass players on your covers and in your pages for the past 15 years.
Case in point..Paul McCartney..I mean, cmon. \:\) We all know he is great and he will be amazing forever; but isn't there anyone else we haven't heard of that is pushing the bass forward. We know that Jaco, Paul, Les, Flea, Victor, Stanley, Billy Sheehan, Jeff Berlin, John Myung, Steve Bailey, Stefan Lessard, Marcus Miller, Geddy Lee, and a few others are amazing. I feel like your magazine is about 90% these guys who we have all read about before...several times. How about some players you have never mentioned in any way? I would be more inclined to buy that issue! I suggest you check out http://www.myspace.com, the exponentially expanding networking site for musicians. There are some truly amazing bass players from all over the world who get tons of attention from other players, just not the press. How about an article on us, or on players on the web in general.
I guess I beleive that your magazine should be more on the cutting edge and less about honoring what most of us already respect and understand.
Thanks and feel free to check out my stuff!www.arambedrosian.com
Sincerely,

Hey Aram,

The editors are recovering from their trip to NYC. They left the final details to Greg (who stayed behind), and he changed all the articles to be about whales and how deep their voices are. The rest of the team has been trying to convince the printer to hold up production, but it turns out the printer used to work at SeaWorld and likes the new direction.

I find that BP features people that are somewhat popular. I think it's tough - even for hard-core soloists - to never see someone they recognize. I am not a soloist, and like the mix. I find that every month there are plenty of bassists that I've never heard of. I could see a "soloist" feature - one solo bass guy per issue. I could also see a "60s burner" feature to talk about all the guys I grew up with but never really knew (who was the bassist from Frijid Pink? Three Dog Night? The Five Americans?).

Anyone else?

Tom

Hey Tom!
Thanks for your response..
I totally see your point and I think its a good one...I guess I feel that there hasn't been alot of ground breaking work in the world of bass lately that I have heard about; I depend on the magazine to bring that to me. It might just be the case that there isn't a ton of it happening, but I can't believe that since Its such a big world..
Maybe someone should try soloing in a whale tank..maybe that would get some attention \:\)

Yeah, but they'd probably end up fried like that minister in Texas.

Maybe Adrian Belew could compose the piece; he has some experience with whale sounds.

I think it's tough to balance the new things going on (solo bass, more-than-6 strings) with "news" about the mainstream. I'd be interested in reading some of the "new" stuff, but I'm not that adventurous. I still enjoy reading about guys that are doing supportive work with a bit of a push to add that extra color.

And sadly, I really would like a page each month on "lost" bassists....
