Hey guys,
Beginning with our March issue redesign, we started to ask nearly everyone we interview what they're currently listening to. The idea is to focus on how we can stay inspired. Have you been hipped to any new music from these little sidebars? And more important, what are you currently spinning--and what's so cool about it?
Bill

That's a great idea, Bill. In fact, on the Low Down we have a long running thread with the same concept.
I am listening to a rare CD by David Gates called "First." This was his first solo album post-Bread. It includes a convincing original jazz head called "Lorilee," but the main reason I listen is for Larry Knechtel. With every note he plays, Larry gives a clinic on pop playing. This music is quite similiar to the praise/worship music so many of us are hired to play, and it's nice to get it into our heads.
Also, Larry often plays ballads with a pick; unusual, but interesting.
I'm also listening to "Roots in the Sky" by Oregon. Glen Moore's bass lines are incredibly interesting, made more so by his unique tuning (C-D-A-C high to low.) One tune on the album is based on such an interesting bass riff I was inspired to change from Electric to URB...at least for 10 years.

I like the inclusion in the sidebars. I have yet to follow thru on any of the CDs that various artists have mentioned. But I love reading what they have to say about one or two CDs.
I did buy Oz Noy's Ha! based partially on the BP review. I listen to those tracks with frightening regularity. Will Lee and James Genus tear it up, and Oz's music is simply uber-cool.
Peace. --SW

That's cool, Dave. It's amazing how one performance can be so inspiring as to change your whole direction.
As for the "currently spinning" idea itself, we did look at some of the things we liked in the forums when discussing the redesign, and I'm sure some of the things we saw informed what we evenutally came up with.
As for me, I've been throwing a variety of odd tunes into iTunes' "Party Shuffle." I've been digging Steve Wonder's "Innervisions" album, the new album from the Like, Aretha Franklin and Paul McCartney & Wings' greatest hits, and Mars Volta's "Deloused in the Comatorium."

I borrowed the Oz Noy CD from one of the Guitar Player editors, but I've yet to spin it. Lots of the guys around here love it.

I find it interesting to see what others are listening to, also. Can't say that it's ever influenced what I buy, though. Currently I'm listening to Trip Wamsley's "It's Better This Way" disc, after meeting him at a Caedmon's Call concert the other week; and Porcupine Tree's "Deadwing". Plus stuff on the shuffle on the pc (just pulled up "Grace" by Jars of Clay).

Trip's a great player and a great guy. And I'm not just saying that in hopes that he'll see this and be moved to return my Japan video with Mick Karn.

And Mick Karn's buddy from Japan, Richard Barbieri, is playing keys with Porcupine Tree... Full circle, with less than six degrees of separation in our posts!
