In the past year there seems to be a trend in the cover photography.
The artists are shown holding their basses by the strings, by the body, upside down, all kinds of ways other than in playing position.
Some of the ways of holding the bass are not very good for the instrument.
This is making some of us nervous.
I know that the poses are trying to break the monotony of the same pose for everyone....and trying to get a bass into the picture instead of just a head shot of the featured artist.
But sometimes I wonder.

I'm with Jeremy on this issue. I think both he & I are above 50 yrs old. I DO NOT want the same sort of philosophy migrating to the cover shots used to sell 'Proctology Illustrated'. You can understand the deep concern whenever such photos have the potential to influence the doctors who are performing our annual physicals.

I’m not going to go into the proctology thing, but …
Changing things up is definitely what we had in mind when we decided to use cover images featuring players holding their instrument in a non-traditional position. With all respect, fearing for the instrument’s health might be a little grave. For all their visual and player-ly (I know, that’s not a real word) appeal, solidbody basses aren't fragile teacups; they're structures engineered to withstand a few hundred pounds of constant string tension. We haven't had any reports of any damage to the players or the basses at our cover shoots.
If Victor Wooten can toss his original Fodera around his back night after night and still use it after more than 20 years you might get by with holding your bass up next to your head for a photograph. Maybe.

ha! Good one, Jeremy, that's funny!
Coincidentally enough, seconds before I saw this posting I was talking to Bill about the interview I did with Paul Simonon a few years ago.

...then again, if BPM wants me to be on the cover with me holding my P '51 reissue by the nut with a pair of tweezers...

Yeah Jeremy, I've seen a couple myself especially on magazine covers. But I thought to myself, 'these guys have loads of basses, what's one little scratch'?
I just had a 'photo shoot' for my next project , I'm holding the bass like I really know what I'm doing . People will think it's an Anthony Jackson CD, till they hear it .
Funny enough, I'm probably the first bassist in East Africa to do such an album....it's only my 3rd year playing bass...STILL A LEARNER . So on this subject, there aren't any album covers by bassists or guitarists I can post to show you guys whagwaan in this corner of the globe. One Love
