Guys, I have about 10 years of your fine magazine in boxes in my basement. Every once in a while, I wonder, "Gee did they ever do any lessons about (fill in artist name here)?" Is there any place where I could look up whether, for example, you guys have done a look at classic James Gang riffs?

This is a valid point. I have over twenty years of GP & frequently review back issues. Nothing is more frustrating than knowing you have an article somewhere inside 60-100 issues but just don't have the time to go through each one to find it. The old GP web site had a 30 year artist index & gear archive that helped a lot.
My suggestion would be that GP commit to establishing a searchable index of artists, gear, articles & other categories. If it is too labor intensive to do this with past issues, at least pick a starting point & begin building from then on. The index wouldn't have to provide online links to the articles, just give the location data. You might sell a lot of back issues with this feature.
For what its worth, GP did an article on crazy faces that guitarists make & broke them down into categories (the "Hot" face, the "What's That Smell" face, etc.). This was probably 10-15 years ago. It single handedly put a stop to G.E. Smith's preening on "Saturday Night Live". If anyone knows what issue this is in, I would appreciate the info.

Yea it would be nice to see some type of index in order to locate a certain article or feature but it seems as though guitar player mag does what it wants to do and doen't listen very well.I would like to see an annual issue devoted to some of the great country guitarists(present and past) as there are plenty to choose from(Don Rich,Roy Nichols,Brent Mason,Redd Volkaert)just to name a few ,or even a monthly lesson feature based on certain country players techniques, style or licks.Come on Guitar Player lets see some real issues that a working guitarist can use and learn a little history at the same time. How about it?

To Fender Fanatic:
Guitar Player has had issues that featured country players, and often has columns showing hot country licks using open strings.
All of the artists that you mentioned have been interviewed, and quite likely some of their licks written out.
If you want, I can copy some things for you. Send me a PM and we can make arrangements.
At the very least, it's not fair to say that GP has neglected country guitar, or jazz guitar... not much these days for classical/fingerstyle players, but maybe that's what Frets is for!
At any rate, I've got about 30 years worth of GP around the house, much to my wife's chagrin, so there are very few guitar styles that aren't represented! And GP has turned me on to many fine artists, and I can buy their instructional videos if I want to!

When is the last time Guitar Player featured a Country Artist/Guitar Player on the cover? I don't recall any in the last couple of decades(maybe Junior Brown) and I have every issue from the beginning when it started in 1967 So yea I am saying that GP has neglected country guitar playing for the most part. For instance,GP has never done a Brad Paisley cover story. He is one of the top five hottest acts in the business and the boy knows how to play guitar.Vintage Guitar magazine has featured him on the cover twice in the last 5 years with lenghty interviews. He just recently won two CMA awards, one for album of the year which by the way features some very serious guitar playing.I would of thought GP would have featured Brad Paisley long before seeing yet another Zakk Wydle cover feature.

Found one! Chet Atkins in the March '72 issue. Quote: "In this our yearly artist profile, we present some of the guitarists most often requested by GP's readers. Some of the names may be new to you, others may be old friends. Either way, we hope you like our 1972 Annual artist issue." Other names given equal billing to Chet on the cover are James Burton, Jerry Byrd, Roy Buchanan, Leo Kottke, Oscar Ghiglia ('72 must have been a big year for Oscar) Carol Kaye, Slim Dusty and Jesse Fuller. I've actually posted a similar request for an index a while back. Maybe we just have to rely on our own and others memories, Farenheit 451 style. or maybe there's a GP forumite with plenty of time on his /her hands? Or how about we start a thread inviting people to summarise past issues and gradually build up an index? Btw I think there was an index of past issues every so often in the olden days, or am I imagining this? PS I love old GP issues, mostly scavenged from second hand book and record shops around Sydney.

Why is who is on the cover the issue? There are plenty of hot country licks in the instructional columns!
You could put Paris Hilton (God forbid!!) on the cover for all I care, as long as there are good interviews and reviews, and (most importantly) musical goodies to chew on!

OK, FF, maybe you have a point. I don't think that GP has neglected country players, and certainly hasn't disrespected them, but you are right, they are not on the cover.
If I still am too damn dumb to get your point, feel free to PM me if you want to.
Who is on the cover, if I have read the editor's comments right, is largely a question of what will generate newstand sales. Maybe Brad Paisley's face on the cover WOULD sell a few more magazines, since he is popular right now! But Brad Paisley was covered in the magazine, and spoken of highly, if I remember right.
But there are many geniuses/virtuosos (or at least, highly talented players) that will probably never be on the cover, for the reasons stated above.
Maybe GP needs to do another magazine dedicated to country players, though - there's certainly many of them who could use the exposure.
