Hi all...
The GP editors are considering an unsung heroes or forgotten greats themed issue for 2006.
Please "nominate" your guitar heroes in this forum. All kick-ass players who you feel never achieved cultural, commercial, and/or financial success commensurate with their gifts are eligible.
You can merely leave a name, or post a name and a short missive as to why you believe your picks are worthy.
Let's have some fun with this, and recognize some players who deserve more glory.
I'll also post this call for action in the main guitar forum.
Thanks for your participation.
Cheers, Mike

I nominate Anson Funderburg, a Dallas local who does ok in the states but is pretty big in Europe.
I think an unsung heroes issue is long overdue. It used to be the GP was a leader in introducing great guitarists to the masses. The Danny Gatton cover and soundpage were huge. I had never heard of him before GP did a story on him. I think GP still does a good job at new music, but I would love to find more. Not so much of a blurb on whatever new band a record company is pushing, but some of those guys that will never get airplay because they don't have a limited format or a good image.

I just now remembered the first time i ever heard of Casper Brotzmann and David Torn was in gp.And bands like Trans Am as well.It would be strange to see what my cd collection would look like if it wasn't for some of those past issues. They had a Space rock article that was killer. In fact that might have been the first time i ever heard of Pourcupine tree. They had something called the Dirty 30 that had some sick players in it.I think thats where i first heard of Terje Rypal.

I would have to add the German classical guitarist, Hubert Kappell, who, again, I found out about in your pages.
His version of the Bach Partita #6 (originally for keyboard) is superb, and I have a CD by him doing pieces by Schubert and Brahms, that is really beautiful.
And Amos Garrett should be remembered, while he is STILL ALIVE! He is one of the pioneers of multi-string bending, and still one of the best!

What about those guys on Bourbon.
Everytime I hit Bourbon Street I hear some real life honest to god blues players. Every single one of thier names escape me. But they always made Bourbon Street my favorite place to hear live music.
I had long ago given up playing guitar. But the first time I visited BS, I was reborn as a guitarist. I wanted the energy and the excitment that I found thier.
Maybe GP could do a column about local live scenes and do a short profile on each city.
Just a thought.

Johnny Thunders (New York Dolls; the Heartbreakers; solo)
I don't consider him to be "unsung" but I really don't recall much being written about him in GP lately so maybe its time!
His work with the Dolls influenced many of the punk bands the followed both in NY and the UK.
He had a unique sound and style that was certainly blues influenced. His guitar playing and solos seemed basic but fit the songs perfectly. His version of Pipeline (So Alone) is GREAT! The Les Paul Jr will always be associated with him.
While I didn't discover Johnny Thunders until after I had been playing guitar for a few years, he is one of the most influential players to me in my book!

Here's a Thunders connection for ya! Strange how things link up sometimes. Recently I saw a video of the Only Ones 'Another girl, Another Planet'. Loved the solo by the guitar player and found out he is a guy called John Perry - he was in a band with Johnny Thunders for a while. John Perry

I always liked that song by the Only Ones. I enjoyed his songs posted on Myspave too.

The name I'll drop is my old teacher, Dick Lurie, a student of Segovia's who found his true calling in fingerstyle jazz and teaching. He died at the age of 86 while on his way to a gig...... I agree, a good teacher is worth his weight in titanium! I think a lot of your famous players would agree that a lot of what they know they learned from other people!
If you guys end up doing the Unknown Greats issue, you could have an article on famous players' teachers and kill three birds with one axe, or whatever the cliche is.... Lord please help me not a brother to spurn Because what little I know took me years to learn!

From good ole Wikipedia...
"Perrett and Kellie caught the eye of Johnny Thunders, founding member of the New York Dolls and the Heartbreakers, and worked as sidemen on his solo debut So Alone, notably appearing together on the classic "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory" (which Guns n' Roses covered on The Spaghetti Incident). However, drug addiction, particularly heroin use, derailed their career..."

My nomination is for Hershel Yatovitz of Chris Isaak's band. His playing epitomizes taste and vibe. Plus, David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos don't get anywhere near the attention they deserve.
I also wanna nominate two more killer players who I once had the privilege to see play together:
- Dave Gonzales of the Paladins; he makes his vintage Guild sing on great rockabilly-tinged blues.
- Charlie Baty of Little Charlie and the Nightcats; they play every style of blues and Charlie's playing is always perfect for the song.

Rory Gallagher. Roy Buchannan. These guys need no verbal hype. Just check out "Irish Tour", and "Live Stock". Both had unfortunate and sad life stories, but left us with such treasure.

How do scorpions play guitar? With their stingers?
But that is a reminder to go try a 7-string!
And to interview some more 7-stringers - assuming anyone is still doing it, apart from Steve Bello and a handful of George Van Eps disciples!

Picker,
Cool that you mentioned Bubble Puppy. I don't suppose a lot of folks remember that band, but I do.
You can check out Todd Potter's (guitarist for Bubble Puppy) website at http://toddpotter.com

What's going on ???? Is it just my imagination or did you all forget about one of the baddest guitar-slinger's out there today - Allen Cato ??
Allen has been layin it down for MeshellNdegeocello for quite a while now and he's crossin' all of the tracks - jazz, funk, rock, folk, etc..
Can we give the brutha some because he's BAD ????
