We practiced last weekend for the first time in WAY too long. Instead of the ho-hum usual thing of going through our regular set list, we did something a little different, and it was really cool: we brought in a guest member!
And old friend who is an excellent all-around musician sat in with us on keys. We've always been a guitar-drums-bass-singer band, so the extra element of a keyboard player doing tasty electric piano, organ and a few strings was awesome. Plus, it opened our repertoire to include keyboard-based tunes we never could have done before.
Unfortunately, the guy we jammed with lives over 50 miles from us, so we'll be lucky to get him when we can... he's not about to sign up as a permanent member. Hopefully, we can put together a special set list of tunes he can play on, and in the event the stars align and he's available for a gig, we'll be happy to have him.
Do any of you ever experiement with your band like this?

We have a hard enough time getting our own band members to show up!! At least in my previous band.
How cool it must have been to have a talented player sit in and add to the night. Hope it works out for the extended set list and the night out playing.
BTW, who was the keys player, anyone we know? As I recall, dB lives not too far from you, and is a smokin' player.

But no, it wasn't the Tazmanian Devil of keys, in as much as it's always a pleaure to rock with Dave.
In any case, dB and I are at opposite ends of the LA area (about 50 miles away from me), and the guy we rocked with is 50 miles in the other direction. Not a good situation in either case.
It looks like we're going to put aside a set list when we can jam with Roy, and grab a gig with him sometime when the stars align.

Our band does not have the luxury of rehearsing, we just show up and play.
But when band members take time off, there is always the "what now" factor. Who's going to sing this song, and what key is it in? How do we end this song anyway?
Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's not........

Sounds like alot of you have terrible situations to get your jam on. Me being the guitarist in my shin dig has been blessed with living right in the middle of my bassists and drummers house. We literally live 5 min from each walking time and our jam space is convientally located at my bassist's house. But as previously stated, a keyboard in a simple guitar, bass, drums band is a heaven send. I just havn't found the keyboardist that suits our sound. We have to play covers for most of the tricks that come and jam.
