We had a very interesting rehersal last weekend. Before I get into that, let me say that the 2-3 months this band has been together have been really amazing. Rehersals have been well planned and consistent. In the first 6 weeks, we learned 25 new songs. This is a totally new experience for me, as the last band would be lucky to learn a new song every 5 practices.
Discussions take place before and after we play. We go home knowing what we need to learn before next week. Everyone does his/her part(most of the time) to learn these. I guess it helps that most of these are very simple songs. We will play a new song 10 time in a row, if that's what it's takes to get it right.
Since the weekend before was our first gig, our esteemed leader, Mike, wanted to talk about it, song by song. Things have been going pretty good so far. First we talked about how good it went. Lots of people danced, we recieved lots of compliments afterward. It was a fund raiser, so there were 3 bands, and we were 2nd. All the bands know each other, as this was church related, but this was the first time anyone has heard or seen us. We heard that the last band was blown away by us, almost to the point of intimidation, and changed their set on the spot to include more dance tunes. Wow.
Now the bad stuff. Mike pointed out missing cues, flat singing, wrong notes and lacking stage presence. I was not not bothered by this, and in fact invited detailed critisism, to give me direction to improve. Not everyone else was so thrilled.
One female singer was reduced to tears and fled to the kitchen. She eventually recovered and rejoined us. Mike is not a bad guy, or even a mean man. He just wants to put on the best show possible. What would Love Shack sound like without the un-manly accent used on the original recording? That's exactly his point. We played a few songs, working on the areas that needed improvment, and we did improve!
Sorry for the long post. This band is a whole lot more work than previous bands, but I guess that what it takes.
btw, when your in a band with 2 married couples, don't make bad Fleetwood Mac jokes.

That sounds like the kind of rehearsals I'd like to attend.
The crowd I'm playing with at the moment either descend into a jam, or just play the set list for themselves.
Drives me nuts.

Yeah, I feel you on the married couple thing. We tried learning a new song at last practice and it crashed and burned. We usually pretty well learn new songs, but with the whole other issue going on (read my other post if you haven't seen it yet) it ended with the singer quitting and then adding extra practices as of which I am not aware of yet.
I believe my band is imploding...

G. In the last band, the drummer would score the song at the end, like 1 to 100 percent. If it was 80 or better, we would move to the next one. Sometimes it would take 2 months to work out even the smallest of kinks. What a waste of time.

1. The need to work out small details (who will sing what harmony, who will cover the 3rd guitar part, etc. This can be worked out by decent players at the practice, and perfected the same day. Or...
2. The failure of one or more people to really learn their parts.....that can keep you from mastering a piece for weeks.
