Due to family matters and other obligations, we are a band that plays out anywhere from 2 - 4 times a month - max.

We're having problems doing our own booking because we are so "restricted" on when we are available to play.

Would a booking agency be of any benefit to us given that we don't want a "full" schedule? I have no idea how that all works. Could someone please shed some light on this for me?

Thanks,

Mike

I'm not sure I completely understand what you mean by 'restricted'. I assume you mean that the band is only available on weekends. That's not all that unusual. If your schedule of availability is REALLY irregular to the point that you wouldn't know if you could accept a booking, that could present a problem. That would present a problem for ANYBODY, really.

Good booking agents will most certainly line up dates for you in advance. You then have to decide, usually quickly, whether to accept the jobs. I do believe that if an agent presented you with, let's say, 3 gig dates in advance, and you had to turn down 2 of them for whatever reason, it may not go over too well with the agent. If you ARE available most every weekend within reason, you should be fine. It may be difficult, but try to find an agent who is willing to work with you and your set of circumstances.

Hope this helps a bit....good luck!

I mean we can't play EVERY weekend - two to three dates a months has been typical. And if we play three shows a month, then usually two of those dates have been in the same weekend (leaving two weekends a month open for family stuff, etc.).

I set up a scheduling calendar on http://www.calendars.net that we use to black out dates. That lets us know in advance when we are available.

And yes, that does help. Thanks!

We play extremely irregularly due to shift work, When the bass player is off the drummer is working and vice versa, we have taken to using a fill in bassist who plays more than our own bassist. It makes it hard but we get our shift roster and go see the local pubs and if he can fit round it great. For other gigs it's really pot luck. But we have a ball when we do get out live.

I thnk a LOT of bands only gig 2 to 3 weekends a month.

A lot of bars/clubs like to rotate their band schedules, so it works out well....one weekend a month at venue A, one weekend a month at venue B.
