Reading the thread about those of you who've seen yourselves play on video, I was wondering - what kinds of things did you quit doing after seeing them. Or for that matter after having someone else tell you something you were doing?

I try not to glare at bandmates when they make a mistake. I also try not to react visually if I make a mistake. I've found that unless the song comes to a crashing halt, the audience usually don't really notice if you sing the second verse twice or only play a bit of the solo note for note. If they're dancing and having a blast, they don't really care.

Well I've only played two gigs, one with a band which up until recently I didn't take too seriously, and one band which I took incredibly seriously.
The first one, I played the gig but wasn't utterly entertained by the notion, and hence when I saw pics of myself I was a bit taken aback by how bored I looked.
The second one I must saw was more of a challenge musically, and I did have more fun. Not sure if it comes across or not, but you can check for yourselves .
After that, I decided to always give it a minimum of 101%. Of course, I quit the "serious" band which makes the other one my main gig now Life, aside from being ironic and cruel, can sometimes be ... no wait, that's all it is

I've done hundreds of gigs over the past 20+ years. It was pretty early on that I stopped doing things like giving hate looks at my band members... it's just silly and does nothing to help the situation.
More recently, I've tried to stop myself from ever doing the following:
- During a solo, adopting a big dumb-looking overbite while grimacing as if in tremendous pain.
- Looking bored, as if I'd rather be somewhere else, even at gigs in which I'd actually rather be somewhere else.
- Doing ANY kind of leaps or kicks. Until I have a double black-belt mastery of Tae Kwon Do, I'll look like an idiot.
- Flirting with ladies in the audience during songs. It's all good until you start flubbing notes while winking at them, then lamely trying to find your place in the tune again.
But perfection is never achievable, so I look to continually improve. I figure by the time I'm 90, I'll have the whole thing dwn pat. And then, I'm gonna REALLY rock!
- Jeff

I've decided that I am too damn fat to jump.
So... when everyone else jumps, I flop on the ground.
Works for me.

I have to follow Jeff in trying to not look bored. As the keys player, I have a bit of difficulty in being "active", I can't run around the stage, jump off the mains, etc, but I can dance around a bit, interact with fellow bandmates, and just look like I believe in what I am doing and am having a good time doing it. As I get older I find that I also don't have the energy to do the more acrobatic stuff that we did in the '80s. I can remember more than one gig that we had to reschedule 'cuz someone broke something (finger, arm once, twisted ankle) doing that crazy stuff. Ah, the old days...

Stop starring at one object or in one direction while I am singing.

I try never to buy into, feed or fuel the dreaded 'LSS' --- (lead singer syndrome).

right leg bent and preferably resting against a wall or perilously placed speaker equipment. and big dumb looking overbite and afar away glaze in my eyes.

I've learned to not be boring. And to be AWARE of it; to connect with the AUDIENCE as much as possible. Remember that at any given moment someone is watching YOU. And that person paid to see you.
I've also learned that NO ONE should ever play onstage without a shirt or with a hat. looks dumb. on ANYONE.

I think I am finally getting a handle on stopping the jam face. When I used to be a lead guitarist ,it was pretty bad. My wife would always ask me why I made those funny faces.
After moving over to the keyboard it has all but disappeared . I just smile now all the time. I thing it's a "guitar thing".

We played a club called Octane and it has TV's running all sorts of racing, extreme sports videos. Didn't think about it till now, I spent a lot of time watching those TV's. I bet that distant look had the effect of me looking like I was in orbit on some substance or another.
