If you could add musicians to your band (and not worry about further divvying up the gig pay as a consideration), what would it be?

- A sax player?
- A second/third/whateverth guitarist?
- Three attractive female backing vocalists?
- A turntablist?
- A percussionist?

Let us know what you'd add to your band if given the chance, and tell us why.

I think I would have to say a percussionist. That way we could do away with the laptop playing Reason for some of the percussion loops that have become so popular, and go with an "all live" show again. We prided ourselves for years on having 2 keyboard players just to avoid sequencing big production stuff, and then we lost a keys player and added a laptop. Seemed ironic. The parts have pared down for me to play, and we are staying away from the bigger production stuff, or are re-arranging it to suit, but we are using Reason more and more as the others in the band are realizing the amazing amount of really cool stuff it can do, forget that it's not "live". Maybe I just miss having Jim in the band. Maybe I am just a bitter "musician" and not just an entertainer. Maybe I have my head too far up my rectum to see a better (or more productive) way. I guess it's all about the crowd anyway, and not my personal preference. And, then again, maybe ...

My $0.02.

I believe that I'd like to have a second guitarist/keyboardist as another member, freeing my singer up from having to play guitar on a few tunes, while vastly broadening our repertoire.

It would be cool, though, to be able to jam with a specialist every so often, be it a sax player or a pedal steel guy. I'd like to see how this would affect the dynamic of the band... I imagine it would be interesting and cool.

Interestingly enough, I think both bands I'm in have really found their sound with the instrumentation that we have.

My jazz trio was originally a quartet, and while I love the sax player we played with for our first year of existence, we've really come into our own as a trio.

The funk/hip-hop band I'm in has the main singer/MC who doubles on a little bit of keys, myself, a guitarist, bassist and drummer, and two backup singers. It might be cool to do a one-off collaboration with a really good turntablist, but I can't see one fitting in the band as a permanent fixture.

Last night I played a gig with a singer-songwriter friend of mine, and it was her on guitar and vocals, a colleague of hers on electric, lap steel and snare, and myself on keyboards. If we were all in the same city and had a dedicated percussionist and a bassist, it would be awesome. I'd never played with anyone who played lap steel before.

Lap steel and pedal steel are incredible instruments that are commonly misconstrued as being only for country music. They add amazing texture to all kinds of sounds that are organic, be they pop, rock, or other genres.

We're a Latin-jazz-ish instrumental group. We currently have this permanent lineup:

Guitar
Keyboards (me)
Bass
Drums
Percussionist

If I had my druthers I'd add:

* 2 string players who play Charanga style, and one of them can double on basic keys for pads and the other play misc. hand percussion.

But that ain't gonna happen. We can afford one other player probably, so:

* An extra keyboardist who EITHER is adept at Ableton Live to trigger the percussion loops I miss from the CD OR can play misc. hand percussion.

But really, what's most LIKELY to happen is this:

* sometimes we'll add a second keyboardist. Who plays keys. Just keys.

The "why and wherefores" of my choices are that our music on the CD we are supporting is layered ... lots of keys under mostly guitar melodies. We also have a ton of hand percussion. One of the high points of our recording, I think, is the presence of string arrangements on some tunes (I wrote them, someone else did a brilliant job of playing them). I would love to have that as an element of our live show ... and because strings aren't in every song, it would be ideal if whoever played them could also play "light duty" second instrument of either keys or percussion.

Since when was a 'turntablist' regarded as a musician?

A roadie. I would much rather have a roadie than another musician. A big burly one.

And WRT a turntablist being a musician, check out Herbie Hancock's DVD "The Futurist". It made me a believer.

I second the roadie!

Ditto regarding tabalists. I used to not regard them as musicians (and many still aren't)however, I have begun to change my opinion. There are many talented and creative people out there using technology and technological devices to create sounds/music, and isn't that the hallmark of the musician (think: guitar pickups, effects boxes, theremins, synths). I have come to think of the turntable and it's associated devices as synths with a different control surface.

It's a brave new world folks, let the music flow!

After all wasn't it The Who that proclaimed that "The music must change!" \:D

A drummer. Not a Neil Peart wannabe who seems incapable of a coherent beat, a real, time keeping, tasteful drummer. Oh that would be nice.....

I prefer not to debate such things here, but I have two responses for you:

1. This topic was about an addition to a band. In many bands, especially those that relate to the hip-hop and other dance-based genres, a turntablist can be much more essential than a tuba player, an oboeist, or a lead guitarist.

2. I've had the pleasure of working with turntablists that were some of the most expressive percussionists I've ever heard, and will never again doubt the validity of their musicianship and instrumental virtuosity.

Just a thought. You're welcome to yours as well. \:\)

Geekgirl gains instant respect for her use of 'druthers'.

I wish we had more time and money for promotions, and better working cars.

Driving an hour or more to promote can be a hassle when everyone's ride is on the fritz at once!

Shoot, in my last band it took me an hour or more just to drive to practice.

The new group that's cookin' up meets at my place!

[edit: Oh, hey, you're in Novi! Are all of us west-siders stealth musicians or something? It seems every band I come across looking for new members is always way on the east side, hence the long commute to practice.]

Oh, I guess I should contribute to the topic, too. Hmm. Well in the current startup we're still getting things together, so we really need a lot of things. We could use a quintessential diva-type singer/frontperson, for sure. (Do I get points for quintessential, or is that overplayed?) ;\)

Having been what my wife calls a "band nerd" (played in the school band; she's an "orchestra geek"), I really dig adding symphonic instruments of any kind. Sure, the synth can dial up "strings", but you know it's never the same as a live, true string quartet. And how do you cover Chicago tunes without trumpet, trombone, and sax?

Yeah we used to practice forever away too, but now we meet at our guitarist's house, since he has a drum set, we don't have to all drive to our drummer, lol.

Now I drive a little over 3 miles to practice. Woo!

...and if I couldn't have a real horn section (ala T.O.P.)...I'd settle for having a charismatic front person who had that special something that "owns" whatever room they're playing. My current act has solid vocals and can play its ass off. When non-stop dance material is what's needed we're as solid as they come - however we struggle when a strong front person that really "owns" the room is what is needed to carry the set.

I wish we had a show under our belt where technical difficulties with equipment didn't derail an otherwise solid performance. Once again, last night, something stupid happened - my gain channel started cutting in and out, which completely distracted both I and the bassist who was standing to my side and threw our timing off.

New amp time....

Tenor player. Not alto. A blues band without a tenor player is...is...is just not right. Our current harp player is cool, but after four songs it's all the same. Happy to trade him straight up for a growly tenor.

I used to want a second guitar player, one who could play lead. We have that now and we sound SOOO much better, so I'm okay. I still say we could use a touch of Hammond organ on the occasional song, but I do not want to add more members to the band.

That said, I do wish we had the equipment to add backing vocals to our songs, as it would help liven them up and elevate everything up a notch or two. The drummer's a fairly good singer and I guess that, with practice, I could carry a tune. I used to do backings in my other bands but then stopped practising that part completely.

That, and I wish we had a gig \:\(

As an update that startup never got off the ground.

However, the band I'm currently in is doing rather well. It'd be nice to have horns on songs like "Mustang Sally", of course, but then we'd have the same problem Geekgirl spoke of earlier: what to do with them on other songs?

Go for real BGVs, David. Just take the plunge and start adding them to rehearsals. And practice your butt off whenever you can. (I usually find time in the shower or in the car on the way to work.) Be prepared to set aside some rehearsal time to work on harmonies. Heck, even take advantage of karaoke nights.

It's far more rewarding to put in the effort to become a better singer than to take the easy road and just say "I can't sing". Nobody's asking you to sing like Mariah Carey in the studio; just to add BGVs to a bar band.

You can do it!
