As expected...zero votes for keyboardists who attract the most attention from the opposite sex

Thanks for putting keys in that poll! If I didn't get to vote for myself as the biggest primadonna, I would have been crushed. Seriously though, I'm the ego guy. I can't be back on the stage, gotta be up front, gotta make sure I get to play leads, etc. To be fair though, most metal keyboardists stand in back and no one can tell what they're playing cuz it's all background crap, so I feel I'm fighting for a good cause.
And no, unless the band is keyboards only, the keyboardist will never get the most love. I get roadie groupie runoff on a good night. On a bad night... you don't wanna know.
Check out my band - Cursed Eternity Check out our Myspace page too, damnit!

Ha! I thought it funny that guitarists are seen as the most prima donna-sih by far.
I am the keyboardist "taking it for the team" in terms of "who gets the most attention from the opposite sex..." but I don't think I garner a disproportionate amount of attention because I'm a keyboardist ... I'm pretty average-looking, so it ain't that either ... I think it's just because I'm female (the only one in the group) and guys have an easier time of approaching women. So that can be skewed.
Also, given that almost every band probably has a guitarist, drummer, and bassist, but not all have turntablist, vocalist (we don't even have vox in our songs), or keyboardist, of course the answers will be more skewed to represent guitarists, bassists, and drummers as "who is the most" whatever. [edit: oh, this was mentioned already] Still, it's a fun survey. Thanks Jeff!
Interesting too that the bassist is seen as the most common "weak link" in the band chain, tho not entirely surprising: it's very easy to start playing bass. However, mastery of that instrument requires dedication, just like any other ... and truly good bassists seem to be in short supply. Job security for the good ones ...

I second that on every count, although I must admit I was about to flame you when I rad that first sentence But seriously, you are right. I always recommend the bass to people who wanna learn to play an instrument and aren't sure which one.

Heh, just got back to this forum, been busy for a few days ... Hey, EddiePlays, no worries. I say that about bass, and I'm a bassist myself! I can even rip off a few Jaco licks here and there ... I think I'm pretty good on bass, but it doesn't make me a bad-ass bassist of the caliber I've had the pleasure to work with.

Like I've said elsewhere: a band can get away with a good bassist and a mediocre guitarist, but even the best guitarist won't make a band listenable without a bass player that hits the right notes... in time.
Bass is crucial!

See, I belive quite differently. As long as the bassist is in key, he can get away with anything he wants. Much like some keyboardists seem to, lol.
Drummer + Vox = Essential
If your drummer blows, you'll never to be able to do those cool changes you want to do or play with the energy you want to. And vocals very often ruin an otherwise good band. You get those nailed then the guitar bass and keys can do whatever and no one'll be the wiser.

Dick, have you ever gone to see a band, and all the elements are there, but there's something musically off, and you can't quite put your finger on it?
It's probably a band with a sucky bassist. And by sucky I don't mean hitting wrong notes, or even notes off-time. I'm talking about a bassist who is off of the groove somewhat, or has flaccid attack, or too much attack for the music. Bass has to glue everything together. If the bassist doesn't do this, the band sound can never rise above the sum of its parts.
If the bassist does do this, the band sounds greater than the sum of its parts.
This is actually true of drummers as well, I will agree with you there. Someone who is solid, has good time, good groove, plays the right stuff in the right places ... that is huge.
OTOH, I've seen many a band get over well even if they have mediocre guitar (yep Jeff, I hear ya!), keys, horns, and/or vox. Yes, I said vox. One man's "unique" vocal is another's aural torture. This is why I can't listen to Smashing Pumpkins and they have sold millions of CDs. Being out of tune never stopped Chili Peppers from rocking lots of worlds, either.

I dunno, most shows I see are mixed so badly that I can't hear the bass in the first place, but the vocals and drums are loud as hell. There are far too many succesful bands with terrible bassists. (then again, there are far too many succcessful bands with bad everything else, but that's a rant for another day:p)
And while I will agree that the Smashing Pumpkins and the Chiggy Peppas suck. Oh you just said vocally, well, still... Anyway, while I agree that they suck vocally, they have a frontman with his own style, who isn't boring on stage. A boring vocalist on stage who sounds like everyone else and doesn't excite the crowd is in my opinion, where a band fails.
Not that they have to be good vocals mind you, they just have to be individual, and interesting. Ie. Iggy Pop, Johnny Rotten, Meatloaf, you know, people that are fun to watch and listen too. Just my two cents anyway.
